The 1981 World Sportscar Championship season was the 29th FIA World Championship for Drivers and Makes. It was a series running under the Group 6, Group 5, and IMSA GTX formulas. These cars usually raced against other classes of cars, although none of these cars were included in the championship. It ran from January 31, 1981 to September 27, 1981, and was comprised of 15 races, including races run with IMSA.
This was the first year in which the World Championship of Makes was combined with the World Endurance Challenge for Drivers to form two championships, which would last until the end of the series.
