Birżebbuġa is a town (population 8,668 (Nov 2005)) and port on Marsaxlokk Bay in southern Malta. The name of the town is Maltese for "Żebbuġa's Well". The word Żebbuġa (Arabic: Wild Olive) is probably an Arabic personal name dating back to Malta's Islamic period.
The town is most well known for the Ice Age fossils found in nearby cave called Ghar Dalam (Dalam's Cave). Birżebbuġa parish church is dedicated to St. Peter of the Chains.

[edit] Coat of arms
Birżebbuġa's coat of arms shows a blue chevron and olive branch on a white field. The blue represents the nearby waters of the Mediterranean Sea and the olive branch is an indication of the once major importance of olives to the local economy.
