[edit] Table order, etc.

Looking good, Tim! One question, though: should the Region 1 column come before or after Region 2 (that is, left or right)? My instinct would be to expect to see Region 2 first, since that's where the DVDs are released first.

Also, is there a way to get the tables for each Doctor to line up neatly? I suppose it could be done by combining it all into one big table, with merged cells across for the Doctor headings, but that has the disadvantage of losing the table of contents. I've only done a little wiki table formatting, so I'm not much use except to ask these niggling questions. :) —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 23:51, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

I did a little homework and created a combined table at User:Josiah Rowe/Doctor Who DVD releases (temp). Take a look and see whether you think it's an improvement. The disadvantage, of course, is that we lose the table of contents. There is another way to keep the Doctors separate and standardize the column widths, but then the table wouldn't autoscale to width of the browser window. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 01:19, 7 November 2005 (UTC)
Please feel free to edit it mercilessly ... but I don't need to tell you that :-) --TimPope 18:10, 7 November 2005 (UTC)
OK, on that principle I've replaced the tables for each Doctor with the single table I'd worked out. If you think it looked better before, feel free to split it back up. I also added the Region 4 dates, from the Australian distributor's website. We're still missing the R4 release dates for the TVM and The Five Doctors, which aren't on the website: perhaps they've been deleted in Oz? There are also a few oddities in the dating, such as Spearhead from Space being released significantly later in R4 than in R1, but barring any clerical errors on my part, those are the dates from the website. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 06:42, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Hmmph. I like it, but the TOC was nice. I can live without it, though.--Sean|Black 07:06, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
I hacked out a TOC for you Sean ;-) --TimPope 18:42, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Oh, that's absolutely briliant. You rock. :)--Sean|Black 21:24, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Cool beans! I didn't know you could do that. Where did you pick that trick up? —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 06:28, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
It was an adaptation of template:TOC which is sometimes used on lists such as List of Doctor Who items, plus an annoying amount of twiddling before realising whilst you cannot use <a> tags, <span> tags can be used instead --TimPope 18:03, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

I have a silly little question - aren't most of the BBC Video/2 Entertain DVD releases actually coded for Region 2+4? What becomes the difference (other than perhaps artwork I guess) when the discs are released for Australia/New Zealand? Oh, one other teensy thing - the BBC website indicates that "The Beginning" boxset will contain "a condensed version of the (missing) fourth story Marco Polo" - should that be noted in the table? --JohnDBuell | Talk 14:49, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] The Beginning Box Set

I know that we are awaiting more information about this set but I wanted to note two things that you hardworking wiki-Dr Who-caretakers will want to keep a watch on. First, there is not yet any mention of this project on 'The Restoration Team's' website (or at least there wasn't 2 days ago when I last checked it). I certainly hope that they will be working on this as their worke on previous DVD releases has been superb. Second the BBC website states that they will include the originally filmed, but unaired, pilot episode that was on the 'Hartnell Years' videotape, so I have changed the episode count to 14 + 1 and, of course, it may change yet again.MarnetteD | Talk 20:25, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

The Restoration Team website is usually one of the last to be updated, depending on when their bosses say they can actually talk about it! The BBC's Doctor Who site has a news blurb: http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/news/cult/news/drwho/2005/11/07/26839.shtml and Outpost Gallifrey has what might be preliminary box art :) --JohnDBuell 01:15, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
Outpost Gallifrey reported on the 23rd that the official Restoration Team article about this box set has been posted. They also reported that after the January 30 UK release, there will be a March 28 US/Canada release. Woohoo! --JohnDBuell 04:15, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Differences between Region releases

There is no information about differences in Region 4 releases, only between Regions 1 and 2. I would guess that the Region 4 DVDs would be identical to the Region 2 ones, but clarification would be an improvement (for want of a better word).

  • Usually Region 2 and 4 are the same (the discs are dual coded for R2 and R4, so the same masters are used for both), the only exceptions are Vengeance on Varos (missing production notes on episode 2 are fixed on the R4) and Rememberance of the Daleks (uses the R1 NTSC version instead, probably becuase of rights problems). [edit] Photo

Image:ClawsofAxosR1DVD.JPG
Region 1 release of The Claws of Axos

Why delete the picture? It's an example. -james_anatidae 10:39, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

I don't know who deleted the picture. I deleted the wiki markup, but not the picture. --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 11:36, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
I meant the deleting of the markup. I don't know why the picture was deleted at the Commons. I was given no warning, despite the fact I took it myself. But why not show an example of what the article is talking about? -james_anatidae 04:18, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
A bit top specific, really, was my feeling. If it was a picture of a whole bunch of Doctor Who DVDs, that would be more appropriate. --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 04:50, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
If I took a photo of my shelf full of R2 and R1 Doctor Who DVDs, would you allow me to include it? :) --JohnDBuell 03:35, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Allow is such a loaded word. I think it's just more appropriate to have a bunch rather than just one. :) --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 03:47, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Okay okay - would you prefer an image of DVD spines, or laid out "fan" style? --JohnDBuell 05:14, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Nevermind, I just took, edited, and uploaded a photo of my shelf. ;) Image:Doctor Who DVD spines.jpg Description is on that page, though it should be pretty legible which discs I've crammed onto that shelf! ;) --JohnDBuell 05:37, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Reformatting of sets

I started off wanting to know which serials were in Lost in Time, then my reformatting kind of snowballed. I think this is an improvement. The formatting starts going slightly squiffy if any of the serial names wrap in the sets, but it's good enough. Could someone who isn't bothered about spoilers for series 2 tidy up its DVDs to match the rest? --KJBracey 10:31, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Reliable sources

I'm trying to find a good DVD release schedule that extends further than June 2006. The BBC's site doesn't extend futher than that... Any recommendations, both for my own use and to help keep Wikipedia happy and updated? ^_^ 147.174.150.163 16:57, 3 May 2006 (UTC)Sean

There really isn't one - they like to keep it hush hush. Current scuttlebut is that The Hand of Fear and The Mark of the Rani are next two. Morwen - Talk 19:37, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Five Doctors cover

Should we add to the footnote about the R2 Five Doctors DVD that this has a cover style that is significantly distinct to all the other releases, and that the BBC published an official alternative cover on their website in December 2004 so that owners wanting a consistent set appearance could print it off and use it? The cover can still be downloaded at the URL below, although when I printed it off it was about 1cm too big all round - I haven't worked out a fix for this yet! http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/news/cult/news/drwho/2004/12/23/16240.shtml --86.27.60.124 10:23, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

That would probably belong on the page for the story, if anywhere. I've got the R2 release of the disc and the graphic saved on my computer, I just haven't tried to print it. --JohnDBuell 11:14, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dalek collector's edition

Also, there is no mention on this page of the R2/4 40th anniversary Dalek collector's edition BBCDVD1384, which contains Dalek invasion of Earth (both discs) as well as Ressurection and Remembrance. http://www.timelash.com/tardis/images/bbcdvd26-uk.jpg I don't know of any other officially licensed BBC product which contains stories already released as individual packages. This was limited to 5000 copies (mine is no. 2278), and I have been told it was sold exclusively by W H Smith, although I don't know if that's the gospel truth. Perhaps this could be added as a footnote to the three individual Dalek stories? Finally, is this page specifically for BBC DVDs or should there also be a mention of the Cushing movies and related box sets? --86.27.60.124 10:34, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

There are more collections like this being released too. Like a Jon Pertwee Limited Edition 7 Disc Box Set, a cybermen set, and a Dalek set. All of them are marked with (Exclusive To Amazon.co.uk) so I'm not sure if they should be included in the list. Maybe as a footnote? Davhorn 09:03, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Next releases

So, reliable news of The Sontaran Experiment and The Invasion have leaked now (Invasion to be partly animated). Apparently the new DWM has an example of the animation. Morwen - Talk

Oh, and also a "Return of the Master" box set. Morwen - Talk 13:59, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
Plus arcording to the Restoration Team in a post on Outpost gallifrey, they will be releasing 10 dvds a year instead of 6.IanC 19:13, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
There's a brief trailer on the bbc.co.uk page (in RealPlayer format). If you'll forgive my saying so, it looks "Excellent." --JohnDBuell 11:10, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] UMD

Should we note the availability of series one on Universal Media Disc on this page, or should we keep it DVD-only? (I know UMD is a different technology, but it's similar enough that I thought I should ask.) —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 18:59, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

It's about to get trickier I think - Warner Home Video has UMD listed for the "vanilla" releases of the new season one, on their website, and Amazon seems to be listing the same under DVDs. So which are being released on July 4th (or shortly thereafter, considering what holiday that is), in addition to the box set? --JohnDBuell 11:12, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Doctor Who serials on DVD

I know this category should someday be redundant, but that should be several years from now and until then I think it might be useful. —Jonathan D. Parshall (talkcontribs) 17:11, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Time Meddler

The BBC shop currently has this up as a 2 disc release in March. However, Steve Roberts said the following on the RT forum:

"I'll repeat what I've said in other places - it's not coming out in March and if and when it does come out it will undoubtedly be a single-disc vanilla release. BBC Shop are using out-of-date information from a schedule that has almost completely changed in the last few months."

The post itself has jumped off the page on the forum, but you can temporarily access a paste someone else did here. Davhorn 07:02, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Survival

Survival has been confirmed as the March 2007 release in December's DWM82.2.113.79 10:39, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Key to Time in R2 and R4

I just noticed that the Key to Time serials are marked as "n/a" under R2 and R4. Does this mean these serials won't be released in those regions? Or should "TBA" be the more correct notation here? If for some reason the Key to Time serials can't or won't be released in R2/R4 (much like the 1996 movie can't be released in R1) then there should be a footnote explaining this. 23skidoo 16:50, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
