'If you want to buy dope North of the river [Thames], you have to deal with the IRA.' This means the punter actually said 'If you want to buy dope North of the river, you have to deal with the IRA.' However he was referring to the river Thames which may not be immediately apparent to someone with no knowledge of London, hence, in a well established convention, the word 'Thames' is interpolated, but set off with square brackets to show that it is editorial. Similarly irrelevant chunks of a long quote are often removed and replaced by [... ...]Rich Farmbrough 09:21, 6 September 2005 (UTC)
