Tiefland, (Lowlands). is an opera by Eugen d'Albert to a libretto by Rudolph Lothar, based on the Catalan play Terra baixa of 1896, by Àngel Guimerà.
It received its premiere on November 13, 1903, at the Neues Deutsches Theater in Prague. The performance was a great success and was followed by productions throughout Europe. It was first staged at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1908 with Emmy Destinn.
Of all of d'Albert's many operas, Tiefland is the one which is now the best known and is occasionally revived.
Leni Riefenstahl filmed an adaptation of the opera, using Roma slave labor from concentration camps for some of the extras; many of those extras were sent to Auschwitz following the production. Her film was not released until 1954.
