A profile of my personality:
I am a fine art graduate who works in a tedious and mindless job to pay the rent and buy art materials.
I've worked (both paid and unpaid) for charities and social services projects with children. One of my employers was Children's World charity.
I also worked as a volunteer helping extremely elderly people and people with learning disabilities such as autism and down's syndrome (in spite of the fact I probably have some sort of mild autism myself).
In the 1980s I went to the Central School of Speech and Drama in Swiss Cottage, London, England for a year to become a drama therapist but failed miserably (mainly because of an inability to suppress my individuality and "blend in" with the group). A few years later I went to the University of Plymouth Art school and did a degree in fine art. I succeeded in gaining an honours degree (mainly because of that selfsame individuality I couldn't suppress on the other course).
I used to work at some animal sanctuaries in Somerset looking after, feeding, mucking-out the animals and helping the vet.
My philosophy of life is an individualised variant of Zen Buddhism and Christianity. I don't smoke or take drugs and seldom drink alcohol or coffee. I over-indulge in tea-drinking though (like many Irish and British people).
I was a pacifist years ago until I asked myself the question: "How would I stop Hitler if I use only the tactics of Mahatma Gandhi?" That thought turned me away from my pacifist beliefs though, of course, a peaceful solution to a problem would always be preferable to war.
I'm also an animal welfarist and a critic of animal rights. I used to think animal welfare and animal rights were all part and parcel of the same movement, but after enough people had convinced me the two movements were very different to each other, I felt I had to choose. In the 1990s I was an active hunt saboteur and anti live-exports protestor at the same time as a fulltime art student.
I love Jazz!
I love books!
I love science fiction!
I love comedy!
I was as vegan as it's probably possible to be in a post-industrial society for 16 years but changed this in 2004 by adding free range egg to my diet.
My favourite authors are Herman Hesse and Michael Moorcock.
My favourite record albums are The Hissing Of Summer Lawns and Court and Spark by Joni Mitchell and Blue Train by John Coltrane.
I think Chris Langham Mitchell and Webb is probably the funniest man in Britain and David Hyde Pierce might well be the funniest man in America.
My father was Canadian and my mother was Irish but I was born in the UK.
I'm an ex-member of Mensa with an IQ of (apparently) 160. This is quite ludicrous to people who know how stupid I can be at times. I blame Asperger's Syndrome or some form of mild PDD not otherwise specified, though I've never officially been diagnosed of it.
I enjoy being left alone by others.
My patterns of speech and uneven gait sometimes make people think I'm odd, freakish, drunk, on drugs or mucking about.
Politically I tend to be in the area of the Liberal Democrat Party and the Green Party but not in full agreement with either of them. I don't mind voting for the Labour Party sometimes if it pushes some issues through. I'm a republican (in the sense that i don't believe in the royals).
I loathe tradition and love the concept of the avant garde.
