[edit] Summary
Photo of Toni Zweifel, a Swiss engineer, a numerary member of Opus Dei who was born on February 15, 1938, in Verona (Italy), the son of a Swiss textile manufacturer. He studied mechanical engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich and received his master’s degree in 1962. After his first professional employment with a firm in Zurich, he worked on research projects from 1964 to 1972 at the Institute for Thermodynamics at the ETH, and patented several inventions. His concern for the underprivileged led him to undertake quite a new professional initiative in 1972: along with several others he founded the Limmat Foundation and became its first director. During the 17 years until his death, the Foundation supported hundreds of projects in more than 30 countries around the world, aiming mainly at the promotion of women, family, health, and professional training. Unassuming in his way of life, Toni was an approachable person with a good sense of humor.
Toni fully accepted God’s will when in 1986 he was faced with the prospect of death from incurable leukemia. He saw in it a caress of God, who was giving him an opportunity to share in the Cross of Christ and to prepare himself for his final meeting with the Lord. Toni died early in the morning of November 24, 1989, already with a reputation of sanctity. His body was laid to rest in Fluntern cemetery in Zurich. His process of beatification has been opened.
