Caption: The Unité d'Habitation in Marseille is a modernist residential tower designed by French architect Le Corbusier in the 1950s. The exposed concrete and irregular yet orthogonal design of the Unité inspired the blockish, monolithic style of Brutalist architecture. The low cost of construction of Brutalist designs made it very common for council housing in the UK during the 1950s and 1960s, and for government buildings elsewhere. Many have come to despise the style due to its association with distressed neighborhoods and government bureaucracy.
