Óskar Pétursson

Óskar Pétursson (born 26 January 1989) is an Icelandic football goalkeeper who currently plays for Ipswich Town. He signed a two-year Academy scholarship in April 2005, Pétursson is considered the most promising keeper in the Nordic countries and had interested a number of English clubs prior to signing for Ipswich and spent time on trial at Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier in the 2004/05 season.

The under-17 international made the bench for his former club Grindavík at the age of 15 and has played for their senior side in a number of recent pre-season friendlies, the Icelandic season running spring to autumn.

Academy recruitment officer Malcolm Moore was in Iceland in March to negotiate the signing of Pétursson and also to discuss a possible tie-up between Town and Grindavík.

Other Icelanders to join the Ipswich Academy include defender Björn Orri Hermannsson. Striker Viktor Unnar Illugason was also lined up by the Suffolk club and spent time at the academy, but chose a move to Premiership Reading instead.
