The Benson & Hedges Series (now Standard Bank Cup) began in 1981-82 with five teams competing. It was an immediate success and the tournament gradually expanded with 11 teams taking part from 1994-95 onwards. Although sponsor names changed, it was not until 2002-03 when Namibia joined that there were any more fundamental changes. In 2004-05, the board completely reorganised the competition, reducing it to the six franchise teams involved in the SuperSport Series. Thye now play each other on a home-and-away basis.
