The 37th New Jersey Infantry was mustered in on June 23rd 1864 for One Hundreds. Before leaving camp on June 28, the seven hundred strong regiment were issued one hundred smoothbore musket altered to percussion and five-hundred and thirty-eight Enfield rifles. Once the 37th New Jersey arrived to the front they were soon put to work unloading supplie trains. On August 27th, the regiment were order to man the trenches in front of Petersburg. They serviced a hard but predictive tour in the trenches of Petersburg and suffered 34 killed and wounded. The 37th New Jersey was mustered out on October 1, 1864.
