[edit] Scientific terminology
Learning any subject requires understanding the specific terminology used in that field of study as that field uses it. Words may have other meanings in different fields, but that doesn't matter. And words in the field may have acquired their meaning there well before the full modern meaning was completely understood. For example, I think the historical meaning of "oxidation" really is "addition of oxygen", which is a common way it is observed, and that's the perfect word for it. But now we realize that the observed "addition of oxygen" was really just a special case of a more general phenomenon that doesn't need to involve oxygen at all. "Reduction" makes very good literal sense still: the oxidation state of the atom is reduced.
In the future, please restrict discussion about a topic to that topic's Talk/Discussion page. If you wanted to discuss or resolve an issue about something in a text-book, would you be better to write a comment in the text or to write a letter to the author? DMacks 21:21, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
- Please refrain from undoing other people's edits repeatedly, as you are doing in Redox. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Rather than reverting, discuss disputed changes on the talk page. The revision you want is not going to be implemented by edit warring. Thank you. DMacks 21:23, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
While Wikipedia welcomes editors' opinions on an article and how it could be changed, these comments are more appropriate for the article's accompanying talk page. If you post your comments there, other editors working on the same article will notice and respond to them and your comments will not disrupt the flow of the article.
Also, be sure to sign your posts on talk pages with four tildes (~~~~) – this will automatically produce a signature so other contributors can indentify multiple posts from you. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page! And again, thanks for your help!

[edit] Most words have more than one meaning
Look in the dictionary. We don't have a problem discerning context for those words so why is this one a problem? If you continue to play this revert game rather than using the talk page, as suggested above, you will likely be blocked. Please take this to the talk page. Really. David D.
