Please refrain from undoing other people's edits repeatedly, as you are doing in Matthew Shepard. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. At any rate please do not do more than three reverts in a 24h period. Rather than reverting, discuss disputed changes on the talk page. The revision you want is not going to be implemented by edit warring. Thank you. . ~a (user • talk • contribs) 20:08, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
You are in danger of violating the three-revert rule. Please cease further reverts or you may be blocked from editing. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 21:12, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for commenting on my talk page. I know you've only reverted three times today - that's why I put on the warning, which says if you revert again you'll be blocked.
- I'm curious why you think calling someone by their first name is more respectful than calling them by their last name? In my experience, it's much more respectful to use last names.
- And regardless of all that, this is an encyclopedia - no respect or disrespect is allowed, as we strive for a neutral point of view. Using first names is much more familiar, and therefore comes from a non-neutral perspective. I welcome your thoughts and comments. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 21:54, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you for commenting on my talk page too. I'd welcome you to read Bill Gates, Jimmy Wales, or George W. Bush. Pages like these all use last names in an encyclopedic tone. ~a (user • talk • contribs) 22:24, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] References to individuals
Hey, I'd just like to remind you that Wikipedia is intended to be an encyclopaedic record of people, places, history etc, not a personal obituary to certain individuals. While I respect your opinion on referencing people by their first name, it is not typical of encyclopaedic entries, and as such, any attempt to continually revert edits contrary to your chosen style of writing will eventually end in a breach of the three revert rule and, in more extreme circumstances, result in your account being temporarily suspended. If you'd like to discuss this more, feel free to leave a message on my talk page. Cheers! Budgiekiller 22:29, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

- Do you see more than three reverts against my user ID in any 24 hour period? NO! I rest my case. 81.158.88.164
[edit] Were you on first-name terms with Mr Shepard?
I don't know, perhaps you were, though I doubt it. If you were, then if the article were your personal testimonial to your friend, it would be appropriate to use his first name. But this is not your personal web site, it's Wikipedia, and 99.9% of editors and readers did not know Mr Shepard personally, and were certainly not on first-name terms with him. It is utterly inappropriate for his Wikipedia article to assume such familiarity. Zsero 11:55, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

- Why dont you mind your own business and go and be utterly inappropriate elsewhere! 81.158.88.164

The use of a persons' surname is the norm in Wikipedia biographies. The relevant guideline can be found here. If you find it to be disrespectful to word articles this way, you should bring this up on the talk page for the Manual of Style. Making repeated changes to an article is almost certain to be reverted quickly. This will just frustrate you, and the people reverting you. If you think there are good reasons for changing the guidelines, please direct your energies to the appropriate talk page. Let me know if you have any questions. -- Samuel Wantman 21:21, 17 December 2006 (UTC)
