Tarzan Alive: A Definitive Biography of Lord Greystoke (Doubleday hardback, 1972; Popular Library paperback 1973 & 1976; Playboy paperback 1981; Bison Books, ISBN 0-8032-6921-8, softcover, 312pp) is a fictional biography written by author Philip José Farmer in 1972. It focuses on Edgar Rice Burroughs' literary hero, Tarzan.
The book is written with the assumption that Tarzan was a real person. Original author Edgar Rice Burroughs is portrayed as writing fictionalized memoirs of the real Tarzan's life. Farmer examines the psychological make up of John Clayton and his peers, based on close readings of the various novels. The most recent edition of the book includes a foreword by Win Scott Eckert and an introduction by Mike Resnick. The body of the biography itself links the characters from the Tarzan mythos to dozens of other fictional literary characters as members of the Wold Newton family.
