[edit] Good article on hand evaluation

I like it, looks pretty good already. It's certainly comprehensive enough that it no longer counts as a stub! Hyperman 42 02:46, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bridge articles

Hi Abtract, and welcome! Thanks for your valuable contributions to contract bridge articles; since there are already several of us that work on the subject, we might as well make a Wikiproject. You may find a list of bridge TODO-s on User:Duja/Bridge; feel free to ammend the list/create the articles. I like your article of Hand evaluation.

Since you're a new user, I'd also like to provide a few editing hints:

  • Please use "Show preview" button more often than "Save page"; it's difficult for other editors to track 20-30 consecutive edits if they want to check your changes.
  • Please check what the links point to. Stuff like void or grand slam lead to disambiguation or unrelated pages; it's undesirable to link to a disambiguation page. In most articles, we inserted {{bridgenote}} at the top, pointing the unfamiliar users to the terminology page. In general, "trivial" or "dictionary" stuff should have a Contract bridge glossary entry rather than a separate article.
  • I see you already discovered how to create redirects. In that case, feel free to delete the remainder of the page and merge its valuable contents (if any) to the redirected-to article. (Frankly, I didn't know about {{R with possibilities}} }} but it's good that you used it).
  • I see you're well equipped with literature and that you Cite your sources. The preferred method of implementation of references/footnotes is described in Wikipedia:Footnotes.

Regards, Duja 10:16, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Redirects

On 14-May, you created a "soft" redirect from HCP to High card point. You should do a real redirect in cases like this. The instructions for how are at Wikipedia:Redirect. I've fixed this one, but if you need help in the future, let me know. Thanks! -- JLaTondre 02:22, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks but I intended the redirect to end at Hand evaluation which it only does with another "press of a button"; is that what you mean by a soft redirect? Either way thanks and I will sort it out.Abtract 07:11, 18 May 2006
(UTC)I have tried adding "&redirect=no" to gain access to HCP but it doesn't work... what am I doing wrong? I used this exact form "HCP%redirect=no" Abtract 07:33, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
By soft redirect, I meant you had "see High card point" as the contents vs. an actual redirect. I didn't catch that it was a double redirect (which won't work), but have fixed it. While "&redirect=no" is correct, it doesn't work with the "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HCP" format of the URL, but with the "http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=HCP" format. The easiest way to access a redirect is to access it normally and then when you get sent to the target page, there will be a "(Redirected from <redirect title>)" at the very top. Click on the <redirect title> and it will take you to the redirect. If that isn't clear enough, let me know. -- JLaTondre 12:20, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] St Agnes, Cornwall

In reply to your message on my talk page: "[...]I appreciate all the help I can get ... in particular you didn't notice that my references do not work; I think I have done everything according to the advice but it still won't do as it should ........ can you help? thanks again.", you are correct, I had not noticed that the references were not working. I find that references and footnotes are strange beasts. For the time being, I have converted your references to in-line external links. You might want to look at the Wikpedia Footnotes page WP:FN for guidance. — Grstain 12:44, 18 May 2006 (UTC) Thanks I will. There is more to this editing lark than meets the eye! Abtract 21:28, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Crossruff

Please comment on Talk:Ruff (cards) about the merging of Crossruff. I disagree with that. Thanks, Duja 08:28, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Please stop merging everything without concensus. One should be bold, but you're overdoing it -- we shouldn't end up with 10 contract bridge articles, each 10,000 lines long, and you started merging quite unrelated things. I hardly fought over keeping Coup en passant separate from Finesse and you're now merging it to Ruff (cards). I'm reverting it. Duja 09:27, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wrigley twins

Hey, Abtract -- welcome to Wikipedia! You asked how I found your Wrigley twins article so quickly -- I do New Page Patrol whenever I can, and have been focusing on stubbing articles so that if the author doesn't have a chance to get back to them, someone else interested in the topic may. Feel free to ask questions on my Talk page if there's anything else I can help you with :) Bookgrrl 20:38, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Orkney

Hi, if you want to rename an article, could you please use WP:RM instead of copy-pasting the content? Otherwise we lose a part of the page history. Thanks, RexNL 20:35, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

if I knew how I would have, it's proving harder than I thought. I will look up the link u suggest . Apologies. Abtract 20:37, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Engaging in discourse with sockpuppets

I strongly recommend that you do not engage in discourse with sockpuppets. If you wish to do so, speak to the sockpuppeteer: User:Mallimak. But do not do it in the main space of Wikipedia. --Mais oui! 09:08, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Attempts to reply

Please check this page's history to find messages that I have posted here but which have been deleted. Orkadian 12:40, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

just for the record this is the message which was deleted:

Please ignore Mais oui! He is well known for making sock puppet allegations as one of his methods of attack. His so-called "evidence" ignores the facts of broadband provision to Orkney. Mais oui! has been instrumental in destroying both the Orcadian Wikipedians' Notice Board and the Orkney Portal. He has constantly made destructive edits to Orkney articles and has attacked Orcadian contributors. We cannot defend ourselves against his barrage. (He often makes around 100 edits a day - look at his contributions record [1]!) Consequently we have decided that our time and effort would be better employed on an independent Orkney wiki. If you wish to contribute here on Wikipedia, good luck to you! Maybe you would like to be one of our first contributors - where your time and effort won't be wasted. [edit] Moving an article

In response to your message on my talk page about moving the article Orkney Islands to Orkney, please note that the history of the article "Orkney" only consists of the creation of the redirect and your try to move the article by copy-pasting its content. The history of "Orkney Islands" is far more significant: it contains the history of the article itself. Therefore, it would not be a big problem if the history of Orkney would be removed, while the history of Orkney Islands is very important to preserve.

My advice would be to propose the move at Wikipedia:Requested moves. An experienced Wikipedia editor will review your proposal, and move the article if he/she agrees. This editor will also make sure that the edit history will be preserved as much as possible. RexNL 14:26, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] No probs

No probs. As I say in my own comments, when I first started I did not know how to do these Requested moves either. Wait until you have a go at Cfds or AfDs!

And thanks for saying thanks. I appreciate it cos we got off on the wrong foot. I had spotted your contributions some time ago and was very pleased. But I have been subjected to a long, long, long campaign of slander and abuse from that sockpuppeteer, and I strongly urge you not to encourage him: not one word that he says is true. I felt that I was totally entitled to remove yet another round of personal attacks from the sock, and if you read WP:NPA, and WP:TPG you will see that I am supported by policy and guidelines. However, at the end of the day, it is your Talk page, so feel free to do with it as you see fit. However, I must point out that no Wikipedian needs "authority" to remove personal abuse from Wikipedia, and that includes User talk pages. --Mais oui! 08:46, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] re: Hi

I came across your name on the Monty Hall recent edits so naturally I "looked you up" but my reason for contacting you is that I have noticed several editors mentioning "recent edits made by a specific editor blah-de-blah": how do they do that? I am asking you because I see on your user page you have made your edits public thus: *My contributions. Is that how one editor can see the edits made by another editor or is there a simpler way I have missed? Also is it considered OK to investigate edits in this way? As you will have guessed I am pretty new to this but very keen on the whole concept.Abtract 20:17, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

All edits are extremely public. From any article, if you click the "history" tab you'll see all the changes made to the article. You can get to this page from your watchlist as well, by clicking the "hist" link for any of the articles listed on your watchlist. Also from your watchlist, you can view the contributions of any user who's been the most recent one to change any of the articles on your watchlist by clicking the "contribs" link (I think this shows up on all users' watchlists). If you go to any user's user page, there's a "user contributions" link (in the toolbox, on the left) that shows their contributions. It is considered perfectly fine to investigate edits using these tools. Everything is public. Everything is open to review by anyone. It's possible to use these tools to harass someone (see Wikipedia:Harassment) and this is not OK (but I really don't think that's why you're asking).
Please feel free to ask me anything, anytime - particularly about Wikipedia. I spend a fair amount of time answering questions at the wikipedia:help desk and the related wikipedia:village pump pages. If you haven't read through the links in the welcome message (at the top of this page) in a while, it might be worth revisiting them (after you've been here a little while, many of these probably make much more sense). -- Rick Block (talk) 15:21, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
Thanks but ... I knew about the history tab but the one that still puzzles me is what you call the "user contributions" link which I surmised existed but which I simply cannot find ... all I see is user page, discussion, edit this page, history (of this page), move and watch (or unwatch). Where am I going wrong? ...................... AH maybe because I am using a laptop but I have to click down a page before it comes to the screen silly me. Now I see it all thanks again I am gratefulAbtract 17:51, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
