[edit] Taking liberties with speedy deletion
Anthony, in what way was this appropriate? Under which CSD criterion would you have deleted it? Even if A7 were applicable to books, does it not assert plenty of notability on its very cover? If I had seen this at the time of your RfA, I would not have supported. - crz crztalk 14:43, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
- I would not have deleted it. Since I do not yet have power to delete, I felt it safe to mark it and let someone else decide. There are so many routine novels. Anthony Appleyard 15:49, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hveragerði
Hi. I have removed the "Hurdygurdy" reference in the above article. It is irrelevant what the (no-longer present) US soldiers called the town. This info is probably better presented in the Naval Air Station Keflavik article, if at all. Please leave a message on my talk page if you want to discuss this further. But if you have any other information to add to the article, feel free! Apologies for the misplaced signature also...Pikiwedian 15:39, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi, fair enough you were tired, so what you put is valid as opposed to the sarcastic comment it looked like, but please don't delete the history of the discussion. I guess you're in the same position as me, the article is blatently all good, but there's no sources cited for any of the claims. Any idea where to start with sources for it? --RedHillian 17:45, 8 January 2007 (UTC) (also in the UK).

- Hi, I completely missed this Afd due to holiday festivities. I see that during the Afd you removed the advertising language, and I was wondering if you would be able to do the same to User:Jayvdb/Saved pages/JasperReports, a copy of I have restored from the google cache. John Vandenberg 10:51, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
- Since then, User:Jayvdb has worked on User:Jayvdb/Saved pages/JasperReports, including putting many references in: this should settle the WP:V query; and I feel that I should wait until he has finished his work on it. Anthony Appleyard 11:05, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Industrial breathing sets category
Hi, is the category for articles related to industrial breathing sets or just for makes (brand names) of industrial breathing sets? Of the 10 other articles in that category 5 of them aren't makes, and I'm unclear why mine rescue and Gas Control Equipment Ltd should be separated out from being alphabetized if the others are not. If we did separate everything that wasn't a make, that would leave only 5 of the 12 articles alphabetized. This isn't important to me one way or the other, I'm just curious and don't know of any Wikipedia style policies one way or the other. Dragomiloff 12:34, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for pointing this out. Category:Rebreathers has 20 members which are types of rebreather and 5 which are not, and I separated them. Category:Industrial breathing sets seems to have less % of members which are types of rebreather, I have now put all its members back into alphabetical order. [edit] Falklands War
- I had just removed some of the content over to that article yesterday; its over 90kb long, and it was recommended in the peer review that the article be split off. Any chance you can revert it back and get rid of the redirect? RHB 14:37, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
- User:SqueakBox wanted Falklands War Argentine surrender merging to Falklands War. so I followed his wishes. See Talk:Falklands War Argentine surrender, and http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Falklands_War_Argentine_surrender&action=history . I have left a message in User talk:SqueakBox asking User:SqueakBox to look here, so this can be discussed. I did not know of the peer review: please what link is it at? Anthony Appleyard 18:00, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
-
- The peer review is here - Wikipedia:Peer review/Falklands War. I would say much of the article needs to be split off as it is, and it looked like a section it was possible with - 85KB when it was the peer review, but 94KB or so now. RHB 18:14, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
- The article was already becoming a focus of contention for more genralised naming issues, it also seems that we could do better in terms of splitting off a section, though personally I think 94KB is pretty small, anyway I see their is contention so I will reflect a bit before seeing if an afd would be appropraite. Cheers, SqueakBox 19:19, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New Zealand cricket seasons
For your information, the WikiProject Cricket is establishing a season review article for every first-class season worldwide. A summary of trophy winners is okay as a quick lookup but there is a need for detailed information per season. At present, we are concentrating on getting the articles in place and the best way to do that in a reasonable time is by creating "lookalike" stubs that can easily be copied and pasted; the next phase (which is already underway re England) is to expand the stubs and provide the details. The English seasons to 1787 are no longer stubs, we intend to enlarge all the others also but it will take several months to do it. --BlackJack | talk page 10:10, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
- I cannot see any future use for this article. I doubt if anyone would wish to expand it especially as we already have lists of trophy winners. Would you please Afd it? --BlackJack | talk page 10:37, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Dumper_workman_2of.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Dumper_workman_2of.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NMajdan•talk 18:04, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Pillar valves
That was why I added the disclaimer. Far be it from me to want to make the whole world pronouce fractured (and sometimes ugly) American English. But the reason I ask is that we always say PIE-lar here, accent on first syllable. Not like piler (like one who makes piles), or pillar (the support column). How do you say it in the UK? SBHarris 22:08, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
- Here in England I have always heard "pillar valve" pronounced as "pill" + unstressed "-er", same as a pillar which is part of a building. Anthony Appleyard 22:34, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hi Anthony
I just noticed that you've created a list of places in Kreis Schleswig-Flensburg copied from a different Wikipedia. Please don't add links to other wikipedias directly in article space. If you wish to make lists of interwiki links, please do it on the talk page of the article in question. In some cases, this will mean that this wikipedia will only link to a non-existing (redlink) article, but this is how the system works. On the other hand, a redlink will make others notice that an article is missing here, and it will hopefully lead to its creation. Most of the readers of this website can't read either German or Danish anyway, so they have no use for any such links. I also noticed that you add links from article space to images on other websites. If you wish to include images here, you need to upload them images to either this Wikipedia or to Commons and add the correct image license. Alternatively, you can make a link to them under the "external links" section or you can link to such material from the article's talk page. However, in actual article space, we're only allowed to use images on Wikipedia's own servers. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Happy editing. Valentinian (talk) / (contribs) 16:33, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] -lev
-lev is a very old and common ending in Danish placenames. It is at least 1,000 years old. The first syllable is normally but not always a man's name and -lev is derived from the verb "leve" which means to "live". E.g. Haderslev = "where Hathar lives", Marslev = "where Mar lives" (in both cases, the "S" is a genitive). Hartlev = "where life is tough" (in German, this name would have been "Hartleben"), Haslev = "where hazel grows" (Hassel = hazel). Valentinian (talk) / (contribs) 17:51, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Schleswig
It will take a little time but I'll try to look for answers to your questions, but I can start with those that I know of for sure:
- Mysunde. Mysunde is located on the north side of Schwansen, near a very narrow part of the Schlei. Any army wishing to outflank the Dannevirke would have to cross the Schlei here. Outflanking it to the west would not be possible under normal conditions since the area between Husum and the western extremity of the Dannevirke was marsh land which was flooded in times of war. Mysunde is located on the road between Kosel and Brodersby. See [1]. It is located in the north-western part of Kosel municipality, see a location map of the municipality at de:Kosel. If you read German, there is a bit more information here: [2], click "Die Gemeinden" and click "Kosel". The same location was the scene of battles during several wars.
- Railways. The Danish railway network was still in its infancy in 1864. North of the Kongeå, only a rail link between Copenhagen and Korsør existed as well as a railway from Århus leading to the north west. Had the Dannevirke been held, potential reinforcements from Copenhagen would have been transported by rail to Korsør and sailed the rest of the way to Flensburg. Such an operation would take a maximum of 2-3 days. The railway network in the duchies was much better: railways linked Hamburg, Kiel, Altona and the city of Schleswig. Less than 10 years before the war, railways opened from Eiderstedt and Husum to the city of Schleswig and from Schleswig to Flensburg. The duchies had no railways north of this point. More interesting is that the railway was never properly used during the evacuation of the Dannevirke with the result that great amounts of artillery, most importantly heavy artillery, were left behind by the Danish army. One explanation is that this was done so the Prussian army wouldn't notice the retreat. A more popular story claims that a waiting train had been instructed to head north at a specific time, which it did, but that the army had not yet arrived to the station due to heavy snow. The equipment transported to Dybbøl was essentially pulled there by soldiers and horses during very poor conditions, as the weather had changed to a snow storm. An iconic image exists of this retreat, and I'll upload a copy one of the days. The city of Schleswig, Flensburg, Sønderborg and Dybbøl were all connected by a road paved with crushed rock and this was the route the army took. The same road continued from Flensburg to Fredericia and Århus and this was the route later taken by the Prussian army when it invaded Jutland. The Dannevirke was abandoned at the orders of the commander, Christian de Meza, who feared that the poorly-repaired fortress couldn't hold out against a bigger foe. Even more so as the Schlei and the wetlands west of the Dannevirke were freezing. His calculations might have been correct, but the decision was not popular, and it is still considered almost a miracle that the army wasn't destroyed when the weather changed for the worse so the army had to march most of the way through a snowstorm. Except for the artillery, it arrived almost in one piece at Dybbøl. Valentinian (talk) / (contribs) 13:36, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Anthony. Unfortunately I can't find any really good sources regarding your questions about Arnæs and the thaw of 1864. As I remember the story, thaw came soon after the army's withdrawal to Dybbøl, but I haven't a good source at hand. Sorry. Around 600 men were caught or killed in action during the retreat and 10 men died of freezing. A number of Schleswigers left the army during the withdrawal, but according to one soldier, most of these returned in less than a day. [3]Valentinian (talk) / (contribs) 20:07, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sprevjane
Recently, there have been problems with an anonymous editor adding sometimes spurious, sometimes POV and counterfactual information to articles on Old Prussia, and I decided to examine the his other edits to see if he was making similar edits to other articles; in doing so, I noticed that he took the entry Sprevjane and moved it to Sprewanen. As you recently edited the Sprevjane article, I thought I'd give you a heads up. The edit may reflect a German POV on the part of the contributor, who also added unreferenced etymological information (most likely folk etymology) linking Spevjane to Spree-wohner. You may wish to move the article back, or simply cite/clean up the etymological information. ---- Beobach972 01:56, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Primary Life Support System
Again, I have removed several of your changes, this time to Primary Life Support System. Firstly, according to the manual of style, prose is preferable to lists where possible. In addition, you removed important text and made the quality of the writing frankly poorer. I really recommend that you take some time to carefully look over the manual of style and its subpages, and read Wikipedia:Guide to writing better articles before arbitrarily changing articles around for the worse. Not only have I had to correct numerous innaccuracies, wording problems, and style deviations from you on several articles, but I have read several complaints about your editing style from other editors. If you want to contibute helpfully to the project, you should consider taking this as constructive criticism, read over the relevant policies, and try to edit more carefully and deliberatively in the future. — Swpb talk contribs 18:19, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
- Discussion continued in Talk:Primary Life Support System#Alterations of Feb 2007.
- This discussion does not really belong in article talk, because it is not particular to a given article, but is a comment on your editing habits in general. — Swpb talk contribs 21:08, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

- A recent admin candidate, in responding to questions during RfA, cited you as an example of a user who was difficult to deal with. This was several weeks ago, I can't find the question today. But for the most part, I was referring to the messages on your own talk pages, which presumably you have read, many of which express confusion and frustration with your edits, as well as the work I have done on Space suit and Spacesuits in fiction cleaning up your problematic edits. I don't mean to attack you, but I think you really should consider editing more carefully and discussing changes before you make them. — Swpb talk contribs 22:37, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Gas chamber
Hello.
I can't understand or believe that you would call my adding fact tags to the Gas Chamber article a type of holocaust denial. I find this very offensive. I add fact tags to many articles, and nobody has ever tried to skirt WP:CITE in such an irresponsible and childish way.
I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but you don't just throw around an accusation like that, especially when someone is going through pages trying to help by adding fact tags where appropriate and the article is in flagrant violation of WP:CITE.
I didn't consider that these fact tags could construed as controversial, and I was not thinking of them in the context of the holocaust denial debate. I was simply adding tags where settled policy says they belong.
I don't know if you are actively involved in the holocaust history issue - it's not a main area of study for me. If you are, I would suggest that you take a more reasonable approach when dealing with people, like myself, who have not looked into the issue. While I know enough about the documentation and study of the holocaust to know that it obviously occurred, I am startled by the level of aggression you have displayed in this instance and I fear it may provide ammunition for the very people whose deceits you seek to mitigate or eliminate from WikiPedia.
Good day. RadicalHarmony 22:55, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
- I was not calling this {{fact}} comment a type of holocaust denial. My edit comment "(rv ... a totally unnecessary "{{fact}}" tag.)" merely meant that so many people know about the Holocaust that surely a reference is not needed. Simiarly with "(rv deletion of a sentence that I put in to counter Holocaust-denial-type queries)". As it is, I have put in a link to Yad Vashem's web site as a fact link. AA, do you have any references for "pah" as an alternate spelling for "pā"? [edit] License tagging for Image:Aa gully emptier 01 rear end.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Aa gully emptier 01 rear end.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:

[edit] Dumpers
- AA, I seem to have reverted your reversion to the disambiguation page. I had forgotten that I had already changed it once. However I think there is a difference between simplification and 'dumbing down', and my initial changes were not made without thought. I would suggest: up to 10 tonnes is not that 'small'; 'one-man' is irrelevant to a disambiguation page entry, which needs to be give as brief a description as will suffice for the purpose of disambiguation; not all dumpers are diesel powered and anyway that is also unnecessary detail; and the final 'around' is also superfluous and not, if I may be so bold, terribly good English. In so far as it may be relevant, I happen to have 40 years experience of construction plant. Bill F 23:42, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
-
- "up to 10 tonnes is not that 'small'": vehicles called "dumpers" (rather than "dump trucks") that I have seen here in England do not go up to the 10-ton range.
- "not all dumpers are diesel powered": OK, I have inserted "usually".
- "one-man" eliminates vehicles designed to carry one or more passengers.
- "off-road vehicle designed for carrying bulk material" in my opinion is by itself not specific enough.
- "I happen to have 40 years experience of construction plant": which country in? We again seem to have run into UK/USA differences in word meanings and in work practices. I am in England.
Anthony Appleyard 07:29, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
- "10 tonne": You have not been looking hard enough. Please see the Thwaites [[4]] website, to which the main article refers.
- On the next two points, the question is whether this level of detail is needed to distinguish this usage of 'dumper' from all the other usages of the word, not whether it is necessary to a complete dictionary definition. I refer you to Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style_(disambiguation_pages)#Individual_entries See the penultimate bullet point before section 5.1.
- What entitles you to assume I am in the USA? A Check on my user page would have revealed that I am in England too. Does my English read like an American's? Bill F 19:09, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Meerkat Manor
Hi Anthony, I didn't delete your summary points of the 3rd season thus far....not sure if someone did, based on your comment? In any case, while I agree that other news sites and websites may have reported on some of these things, people may be coming to Wikipedia as a resource, so to be fair, information about unseen episodes should be between spoiler tags - and right now, the article does indeed have spoiler tags. I did delete an earlier mention of Flower's death that was placed in that lead information area, which was NOT within the spoiler tags. NickBurns 02:15, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Newark Airport Interchange
You commented at the AfD, but did not make an explicit vote. If I may suggest revisiting the Newark Airport Interchange article and the concerns raised in the AfD and voting explicitly either way to ensure that your voice is heard. Alansohn 06:21, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
- OK, I have now altered my answer there. Anthony Appleyard 07:18, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks. I assumed that was the case, but it helps to be sure. Alansohn 07:19, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Question
- Hello Anthony,
- I have a question about your two edits to Hypospray here diff. I mentioned in my edit summary when I deleted the sentence that the text I was deleting failed WP:OR. Did you find a source for the text? Thanks. ~a (user • talk • contribs) 15:25, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
- Google search finds uses of the verb forms "hyposprayed" and "hypospraying". E.g. "B'Elanna was Klingon. She knew. She knew it with ever fiber of her being, and had wanted to deactivate the Doctor again when he hyposprayed her into unconsciousness." in [5] Anthony Appleyard 16:51, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Jurassic Park
I just read the statement that you posted on the Isla Nublar talk page. Are you the one who has read the script review of JP4? If so where did you find it? If not who wrote that? Thanks User:Quinlanfan
- I know nothing about plans for a JP4. Where is information about it? Anthony Appleyard 19:12, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
- On the Isla Nublar talk page someone right above you said that they had read the script. I cant figure out who it is, Quinlanfan2 17:27, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
- It was User:82.20.2.177 at 19:43 on 12 November 2006. I found by trawling the history entries. Anthony Appleyard 17:51, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

- I've just removed your Oxyhydrogen link on Canals because I couldn't see the relevance. Have I missed the point, somewhere? Apologies if so. --Old Moonraker 10:59, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
- German Knallgas used as an English word, could be misheard as "canal gas". Anthony Appleyard 11:36, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
-
- Missed that one, certainly. As I said, apologies! Is it ever used as an English word, though? --Old Moonraker 11:44, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
- See Oxyhydrogen. Anthony Appleyard 11:47, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Whips and crops
I'll go over to the article and try to clarify what I wrote. I don't think it's a USA vs UK thing so much as a riding discipline thing: In the US, a "crop" is usually used for what we call Hunt seat riding and show jumping. It is short (under 24" in some cases), fairly stiff, and has a little popper on the end. A similar tool is used by jockeys in horse racing where the words "crop", "whip" and "bat" are used interchangably for the same item, possibly a regional variation there. Rodeo people call their crops a "bat." A "whip" is longer, what may be seen in Dressage or Saddle seat riding, up to 43" in dressage, longer in other disciplines. It also probably isn't all that cosmically important! ;-) Montanabw 07:11, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
I do think "bat" as a word interchangable with "crop" is possibly an American thing; we too normally consider a "bat" the wooden stick used in baseball or cricket! <grin> But then, most people think a "crop" is somethig that you grow in the ground for food, too! But basically, in the world of horse whips, think of a crop as a short whip or about 24 inches, or think of a whip as a slightly longer, more flexible crop, whatever floats your boat...everyone says "dressage whip," for example, referring to the riding whip that is no more than 43 inches long; no one says "dressage crop." Hope that clarifies things, sort of... Montanabw 07:42, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

This one doesn't: [7] - ∅ (∅), 23:25, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Punctuation
I've noticed you frequently use a colon and a hyphen (":-") in places where only a colon should be used. Please note that this is incorrect punctuation. — Swpb talk contribs 21:19, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikilink in List of rivers by length
I see that you relinked Canada in this list. I don't have a problem with it, but I removed the link because that was one of the reason the list failed at FLC last month. -Phoenix 18:57, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Image: Electroshock baton
There is an argument about your electroshock baton image. I backed you up, but you may want to defend your position. --Defender 911 01:37, 5 April 2007 (UTC) P.S. Heres the link: Talk:Electroshock weapon
[edit] Radio Times table
I notice you have revised the 'wikitable'-class table I recently created on the Radio Times page to include cell-spacing, border, and background colour variables. While the former table conveniently adjusted its size according to browser and screen resolution, the new table looks (to be brutally honest) ugly in both Internet Explorer and Firefox, leaving a large space above.
Having studied WP:TABLE and related pages carefully, I know of no guidelines which suggest the original layout was incorrect. If I am wrong, please correct me on my talk page, but for now I have reverted your edits, if only for æsthetic reasons.
Many thanks for your time - Silver Nemesis 15:00, 8 April 2007 (UTC).
