A boy infected with Schistosoma japonicum shows severe ascites, or a distended abdomen. Due to the presence of this parasite in the patient’s liver, the resulting hepatic scarification causes portal hypertension, or obstructed blood flow through the organ with ensuing ascites, or build-up of fluid in the abdominal cavity.
