The Australian Living History Federation, Incorporated (ALHF) was formed in July 2002.

[edit] Objectives

The objectives of the Association are:

To act as a focus for historical re-enactment and living history societies portraying aspects of World history within Australia
To promote the safe, authentic and realistic re-enactment of all periods of World History.
To promote the interests of members participating in historical re-enactment and related activities by (for example) obtaining and maintaining Australia-wide insurance coverage for members
Instigating and promoting contact, and maintaining liaison with display organisers and Government bodies
To hold special observances, meetings, authentic historical re-enactments, promotional and cultural activities.
To do such other things as are conducive or incidental to the attainment of the above objects.

ALHF and all member groups are involved in some or all of the following activities:

Living history: re-creating civilian & military activities of the particular culture and time period portrayed by the group.
Historical reenactment: the physical reconstruction of history.
Preservation: activities related to the preservation of artefacts, skills, crafts or historical sites.
Research: into a particular period or field in world history.
Public Performances and displays of our activities.

The Association is a non-political, non-profit body, incorporated in NSW with member groups and individuals in NSW, Victoria, ACT, South Australia and Queensland.

Historical re-enactment organisations have developed strict safety rules for the use of edged weapons. The current Interclub guidelines for medieval combat are linked below as an example. These rules and other examples are found at:

A variety of competitions have been run at the Australasian Medieval Convention, held every two years since 1983. The rules for these competitions are archived here.
