[edit] Brief History
Seeking a higher quality street directory for Melbourne, Merv Godfrey and Iven Mackay began hand drawing maps for their proposed directory in 1961. After 5 years of pen and ink drawing and meticulous research, their maps were ready for publication, the first edition of the Melway published in 1966. After receiving publicity from Graham Kennedy on In Melbourne Tonight's New Products, the Melway began selling in big numbers despite critics dismissing the directory as too expensive, being twice as expensive as its nearest rival. Despite this, the directory's quality prevailed, embraced by local residents, "Melway" quickly became a household name, and the company grew from Merv Godfrey's private property to its current residence in Mount Waverley.
