Balaka (Malawi)

Balaka, population 14,298 (1998), is a township in the Southern Region of Malawi, the headquarters of the Balaka District.
A growing commercial center on the road from Zomba to Lilongwe, as well as on a Blantyre-Salima rail route, it was formerly a boma of Machinga District, before the Balaka District was created in 1998.
Malawi musician Lucius Banda was the MP for the disctrict of Balaka, before being imprisoned for education certificate fraud.
