Beldame Stakes

The Beldame Stakes is a Grade I race for Thoroughbred fillies and mares three-years-old and up. It's run at the beginning of October at Belmont Park for a distance of a mile and an eighth and offers a purse of $600,000. As a Grade I event, it is a major Breeders' Cup Distaff prep race.
The race is named for the great race mare Beldame of 1903, 1904, and 1905. During one season, 1904, she won 12 of 14 starts, beating the best colts of her time, and was voted the Horse of the Year honors.
The first New York bred to win an Eclipse Award, Saratoga Dew won this race in 1992. (Funny Cide is only the second Eclipse winner.) Saratoga Dew was 1992's Champion Three-year-old Filly.
Go For Wand won this race in 1990, Personal Ensign in 1987 and 1988, Lady's Secret in 1985 and 1986, Susan's Girl in 1972 and 1975, Shuvee in 1970, Gamely in 1968 and 1969, Cicada in 1962, and Gallorette in 1946.
