Benny Beaver
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Benny Beaver is the official mascot of Oregon State University. The first reference to Benny Beaver appeared in an Oregon State College's 1942 yearbook photo, where students pose next to a statue named "Benny". "Benny" was officially adopted and appeared in print in 1945.
The Benny Beaver cartoon icon/logo was created by Arthur Evans, a graphic artist for Angeles Pacific, and then submitted to OSU and approved for use in 1951.
Benny the mascot first appeared in costume on September 18, 1952. Ken Austin was the first student to appear in costume at an athletic event.
During the 1980s to the mid-1990s, Benny was often joined at sporting events by "Bernice Beaver", a female costumed mascot.
In 1999 the familiar smiling, gentle Benny visage was replaced with what is commonly referred to as the "Angry Beaver" logo, which became his official look in 2001. The mascot, however, retains the original friendly look. Over the years, both men and women have adorned the costume.
In 2005, Benny Beaver's costume was changed to be more family oriented because some children were afraid of the earlier costume.
Benny wears #00 at football games and #6 at basketball games.
