[edit] Books In New York City

I'm trying to make this list exhaustive.

[edit] Catholic Countries

I started that page a few seconds before you contributed to it. Thanks! Dpr 07:33, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

No Problem, editing Wikipedia is so much fun.

I agree...even addictive and life-altering! Haha, they may delete my page. Anyway, thanks for writing on my page. . . Dpr 08:15, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] List of books set in New York City

Hi, I discovered that list the other day and will add more if I can think of any. A belated welcome to Wikipedia! <KF> 18:36, Mar 10, 2005 (UTC)

PS Signing your name plus date is easy: ~~~~

HOw do I do it?

Look for the "tilde" sign on your keyboard and add it four times in a row. Just try it out, it works. On mine—but it's a German one right now—it is on the right-hand side next to the carriage return. All the best, <KF> (this was only three times).

The tilde sign? I don't know what that is? [[[Bremen]]] Bremen

It's this: ~

[edit] Welcome

Welcome to Wikipedia, the greatest encyclopedia on Earth!

You seem to be off to a good start. Hopefully you will soon join the vast army of Wikipediholics. You may wish to review the welcome page, tutorial, and stylebook, as well as the avoiding common mistakes and Wikipedia is not pages. The Wikipedia directory is also quite useful. In addition, you might want to add yourself to the new user log; if you made any edits before getting an account, you may wish to assign those to your username.

By the way, an important tip: To sign comments on talk pages, simply type four tildes, like this: ~~~~. This automatically adds your name and the time after your comments.

Hope to see you around the Wiki! And if you have any questions whatsoever, feel free to contact me on my talk page! - Elf

[edit] Bull Terrier photos

Could you please identify the sources for the Bull Terrier images you uploaded? Specifically, they're at Image:Redbull.jpg and Image:Bullterrier.jpg; need to know who the photographer was if you know, or where they came from, and whether they're really free to use on wikipedia under the GFDL or public domain licensing. Thanks. Elf | Talk 20:52, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Why pink, not blue?

If you'd like to know more about the dog breed articles and how we're trying to make them reasonably consistent with each other, check out Wikipedia:WikiProject Dog breeds. Dog breed tables are pink; that's just what we decided a couple hundred breeds ago, which came out of the Tree of Life project in which mammals are pink. So it has a lot of history to it. :-) Elf | Talk 23:46, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

No problem! It's so easy & fun to edit here, but there's a lot of stuff to become acquainted with, too. I've been at it over a year and I'm still learning some things. Elf | Talk 00:07, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I responded to your latest question at the end of my talk page. Elf | Talk 17:07, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Anita Diamant

OK, the language looks good, but it still needs some Wikipedia markup. See Wikipedia:Manual of style. This is called "wikifying" or "wikification", if you see these terms use din the future.  :) RickK 21:06, Mar 20, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Dog articles

Excellent. You're off to a rolling start! Thanks so much. Couple of suggestions in general:

  • Wikipedia convention uses sentence case in headings, not title case (e.g., use Dog articles, not Dog Articles).
  • I think just "Health" is more to the point than "Health issues" as a heading--after all, we could also call the others "Temperament issues", "Appearance issues"...  :-). Besides, you'll find that some articles talk about the breed's good health and general longevity in that section, not merely about bad things.
  • If you sign your posts on the talk pages, it'll be easier for people to see who said 'em without having to go to the history page. Just takes some getting used to. Elf | Talk 01:30, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

BTW, you're doing great so far and it's a delight to have someone new with energy tackle the dog stuff. Hope you're taking all my suggestions & comments & edits in an educational light, not a critical one. Elf | Talk 03:08, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for your work!

[edit] More thanks

You're still doing a great job. I actually dared to try changing the order & subheads in an article and found myself wondering "Am I doing it how Bremen would do it?" :-)

Hey, thought i'd put a plug in for a couple more tweaks once you get past the "Go..." dog breeds in List of dog breeds; I take a stab at these periodically but just don't always have time for it. If you don't want to, that's fine, but figured it didn't hurt to mention:

  • Change occurrences of {{stub}}, {{msg:stub}},{{animal-stub}} or any other stub to {{dog-stub}}.
  • Change the AKC breed link to the new correct link on the AKC site. It looks like maybe they actually finally put in their own redirects from the old page names to the new page names, but I think it's smart to try to fix them all to the correct URLs. The new current URLs all end in something like breedname/index.cfg; the old ones end in something like breedabbrev.cfg. Easiest way to fix is have a window open to AKC's complete breed list, click on the breed, and capture the URL from the browser. (Some of the FSS/rare breeds are listed separately at the end of the page.)

[edit] Ottoman Map

Hi Bremen. Generally speaking, most images available on the internet are NOT considered to be legally in the public domain (almost no images or photographs created after the 1920s generally are). Sometimes we use copyrighted material under the fair use clause but generally we try not to do that -- it should only be used for situations in which there are no alternatives. Usually images are in the public domain ONLY if they have been released into it by their authors (generally rare outside of Wikipedians), if they are too old for a copyright (usually pre-1923, I think), or if they have been created by a source which means it cannot be copyrighted (any work by the US federal government, for example). If you look at Wikipedia:Copyright it goes into a little more detail. In the case of this map, it is likely not in the public domain -- it looks like it is scanned out of a modern textbook. In this case, the best approach might be to ask someone at Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps if they could re-create the map using some of our map templates we have (I am sure someone there would be glad to do it -- it would not be a lot of work technically speaking and would look quite professional if done well). Another approach to seeing the varieties of "free" images are to look at the options at Wikipedia:Image tags. --Fastfission 03:44, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

    • Ok thanks for all the input. I guess we can't keep that particular map then huh? I'll ask someone at the map project to look at in a few days.Bremen 17:25, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] English Shepherd

I don't agree with your changes to the [English Shepherd] page. The introductory section of an article tries to distinguish the topic of the article from other similar things. In this case it tries to distinguish the English Shepherd from other breeds. Since the English Shepherd breed is not familiar to most people I believe that it is important to clearly distinguish it from other similar, related breeds. That is the purpose of the text you moved/removed, to distinguish the English Shepherd from other similar breeds.

Of necessity any introductory material will be redundant with respect to the main body of the article. If all material is moved from the introduction to the appropriate section of the article, then there is nothing left in the intoduction. It is always important to give the reader a context on which to hang the information in the rest of the article. IMHO the best way to give the reader context on the English Shepherd is to compare and contrast with the very similar Border Collie and Australian Shepherd.

I would like for you to revert your changes or to find some way to compare and contast the ES with the BC and AS in the introduction. I was satisfied with the introduction as written so my response would be to revert it. Since you were dissatisfied I thought it would be better to contact you and see if we could reach a mutually satisfactory solution. Dsurber 03:05, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. I like that better. I also added a sentence contrasting the Border Collie. Dsurber 11:55, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Wow--you made it to the end! Congratulations! What now--are you going to Disneyland? :-) Elf | Talk 06:21, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

If it helps, you can work off the list at Category:Dog stubs. Elf | Talk 06:28, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Putting it on your watchlist won't help much (nothing changes *on* that page--things are added to it by the *articles* changing. But you can go there and click Related changes to see articles that have recently been chged or added to that category. In theory. So maybe have a bookmark to it? (Watchlist will work if you use it like a list of bookmarks.) Elf | Talk 06:35, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] WWII enemy action in North America

Hi, I read that you had restored the following statement to the Bell Island, Newfoundland and Labrador article:

"Bell Island was the only location in North America to have seen enemy action during the war."

Bell Island may have been the only location in close proximity to Newfoundland's landmass which saw enemy action (ie. the U-boat attack on the iron ore ships in Conception Bay), but it was not the only location in all of North America to witness enemy action.

The U-boat campaign along the Atlantic coast was mostly conducted off-shore from U.S. ports, however the Battle of the St. Lawrence saw dozens of ships sunk by U-boats in waters just as close to shore as the 1942 Bell Island attack. There are numerous cases of ships at anchor, or underway (such as the SS Caribou), in the Cabot Strait, along the Gaspé Peninsula and off Halifax and Sydney (Nova Scotia) harbours which were attacked by U-boats. There are also at least 2 documented cases of U-boats dropping spies/sabateurs on the coastlines of Chaleur Bay and the Bay of Fundy. Additionally, a Japanese submarine actually performed the only naval shore bombardment of North America by an axis vessel when a Canadian lighthouse on the British Columbia coast was shelled.

Had you intended the sentence to read "Newfoundland" instead of "North America"?

Cheers, Plasma east 22:12, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Sure - I just didn't want other places on this continent who were so unfortunate to also experience war first-hand to feel left out!  :-) Plasma east 22:38, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Greetings. Do you happen to know the source for Image:Calgnite.jpg? If so, you could strengthen the fair use claim. If not, you might consider tagging the image {{fairuseunknownsource}} instead. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 16:02, Apr 29, 2005 (UTC)

Fair use doesn't require us to know the source, so it's fine. It still would be better to use the {{fairuseunknownsource}} tag. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth)

[edit] Stephen McCauley

I created this page a few minutes ago and now there is this tag on it. I actually created it earlier today but it was deleted. I haven't had much time to enlarge but I can assure you this is a valid article. This author wrote The Object of my Affection which was turned into a movie starring Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd. He's published five novels, the latest just this month and it has been given five star reviews from people and entertainment weekly magazines. Maybe people shouldn't just delete articles without looking to see if they're ok. I wasn't even given a day and poof the thing is gone. Nazis! Bremen 05:55, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Check out WP:CSD for the criteria that allow immediate deletion of an article. If you've got time to include relevant information in my talk page, why not in the article, where it'll help the readers and prevent the article from being speedily deleted as not asserting notability.
Anyway, the tag was intended mostly to steer you towards the relevant guidelines so you would have a starting place to improve the article. 06:00, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
Preferably the article would make it more clear that he passes the 5,000 people audience test, but I would not restore the tag if you removed it now. NickelShoe (Talk) 06:44, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I would think sales figures or similar claims, properly cited, would do the trick. NickelShoe (Talk) 17:14, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
