The BYU Cougars are a college football program that competes in NCAA Division I-A and the Mountain West Conference. Although considered a mid-major program because of conference affiliation, the Cougars have generally fared well in Division I-A. By virtue of being undefeated in 1984, the team was awarded the National Championship, and in 1990 team quarterback Ty Detmer won the Heisman Trophy. As of the 2006 season they have won 21 conference championships since 1974 and have played in 25 bowl games.
