California's Fifth Congressional District currently covers Sacramento, California and the surrounding area. It is currently represented by Democrat Doris Matsui.

Before the 1992 redistricting, the fifth district covered San Francisco, California, now the 8th district.

The district has a Cook Partisan Voting Index score of D +14. George W. Bush received 38% of the vote in this district in 2004.

Incumbent Robert T. Matsui died January 1, 2005. In a special election held on March 8, 2005 to fill the vacancy, Matsui's widow, Doris, won the seat with more than 68% of the vote. She was sworn in on March 10, 2005.
