Laurent holds a Master of Arts degree in History from the University of Windsor. Prior to this he took his Bachelor of Arts degree with the rank of magna cum laude at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. At the beginning of his academic career he completed an Associate in Arts degree.

During his studies he had the opportunity to meet several notable figures, including Seymour Hersh, Anthony Zinni, Scott Ritter, Richard Goldstone, Jim Edgar and Michael Madigan.
His favourite television shows are The Simpsons, Family Guy, Nature, Nova, Frontline, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, Drawn Together, The Late Show with David Letterman, The Daily Show and Deal or No Deal.
