Cardinal is a vivid red, which gets its name from the cassocks worn by Catholic cardinals. The family of birds takes its name from the color.
Cardinal is the official color of Stanford University, though the athletic teams's official colors are cardinal and white (school athletic teams are called "The Cardinal"). Other school colors described as cardinal include those of The University of Arkansas, Brown University, Carnegie Mellon University, The Catholic University of America, Chadron State College, Fairfield University, Iowa State University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stevens Institute of Technology, the University of Southern California, Wesleyan University, Willamette University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and, Lassiter High School. As well as being one of the colors of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.

The corresponding Pantone Matching System (PMS) color is 200. However, Stanford's, M.I.T.´s, and U.S.C.´s PMS color is 201, while Carnegie Mellon uses PMS 187. Catholic University´s PMS color is 1805.
