Catoctin Creek (Virginia)

Catoctin Creek is a tributary of the Potomac River located in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA. The Catoctin Creek's watershed occupies 59,000 acres. The main arteries consist of the Catoctin and its North and South Forks. Agricultural lands (67 percent) and forests (30 percent) make up 97 percent of Catoctin Creek's watershed.

The Catoctin is formed southeast of Milltown along the western edges of Catoctin Mountain by the confluence of its two branches. It flows north along the mountain's western side through the village of Taylorstown. Catoctin Creek continues meandering along the northern edge of Furnace Mountain and empties into the Potomac River to the north of the U.S. Highway 15 bridge across from Point of Rocks, Maryland.

[edit] North Fork Catoctin Creek

The North Fork Catoctin Creek begins at Purcellville Reservoir on the eastern flanks of the Blue Ridge near the West Virginia border. The North Fork meanders along State Route 9 and flows through the gap in Short Hill Mountain at Hillsboro. From Wheatland, the North Fork flows northeast where it meets with the South Fork north of Waterford.

The source of South Fork Catoctin Creek also lies on the eastern flank of the Blue Ridge near Wilson Gap on the West Virginia. From the Blue Ridge, the South Fork flows southeast toward Purcellville. At Purcellville, the creek turns northward then east under VA 9 toward Waterford where it flows north to its confluence with the North Fork to form the Catoctin.
