Ceri Evans (born October 2, 1963) was a successful New Zealand soccer player who frequently represented his country as a central defender in the 1980s and 90s. Evans attended Oxford University as a Rhodes scholar, where he studied medicine and played for Oxford United FC. He was also an accomplished chess and Karate player. He was recommended to Oxford by former player Richard Hill, who played in New Zealand for a while after leaving the club.
Evans headed to the UK in 1988 to study Psychology at Oxford University. Having become a Rhodes Scholar, Ceri spent the next 15 years working in London hospitals. Today Ceri is a Forensic Psychiatrist, a uniquely specialist role managing a secure ward of “acute mentally unwell” patients that pose a threat and require security as part of their treatment.
