The Bombay of the mid-1940s was seeing major changes — socially and demographically. Independence from British rule was imminent. A generation looked forward to a new way of life with hope and great expectations. Idealism was all-pervasive.
Housing for the existing residents and the new immigrants was top priority. The proportion of white-collar workers was growing at a rapid pace. Again the island city and the boundaries and beyond were seeing a spurt in manufacturing units. The Housing board was set up in the erstwhile Bombay state.
