[edit] Campus
The actual campus is set over 19 acres[1], and includes several facilities for student and faculty use, such as the Lawrence-Bell Media Center, which contains a technical resource center, auditorium, TV news studio and several offices; the Abraham Science Building, which contains a physics and chemistry lab and several computer labs, a new and large baseball complex, a state-of-the-art weight room, and three other regular-classroom buildings, just to name a few. Currently, Christopher Columbus High School is pursuing a major construction project to build the "Mas Technology Complex", which will consist of three floors: on the first will be administrative offices, on the second will be several new state-of-the-art computer labs, and on the third will be a large library. The project is expected to take about two years and will be done hopefully in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Columbus in 2009.
[edit] Sports
Columbus is the only private school in Florida that competes at a 6A level(except their sister school, Our Lady of Lourdes Academy). The sports program at Columbus has a long history of winning championships and developing successful athletes. Columbus competes in baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, hockey, swimming, soccer, tennis, track and field, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling on the varsity level. On the JV level, Columbus competes in baseball, basketball, football, rollerhockey, soccer, and volleyball. On the freshman level, Columbus competes in basketball and football.
[edit] Admission and Academics
Upon graduation, students are awarded a Christopher Columbus High School diploma. In order to graduate, students require twenty-four credits and a GPA of at least 2.0. They must also complete seventy-five hours of community service. The academics at Columbus are based on a phasing system: Phase 2 refers to academic prep and is for the academically challenged who require more time to absorb a given subject, Phase 3 refers to college preparatory classes and is for the average student, Phase 4 refers to honors classes and is for the academically gifted, and Phase 5 refers to Advanced Placement classes (AP) which are set to a college-level format and in which academically-motivated students have the opportunity to gain college credit if the proper score on the AP exam is earned. Depending on a given phase of a class, a student will earn a certain amount of points, which are then weighted and averaged to generate a student's Grade Point Average (GPA).
[edit] Mas Scholars Program
Beginning the 2005-2006 school year, the Mas Family Scholars program is an accelerated program at Columbus. On top of being subjected to an advanced curriculum, the students in the program go on enriching field trips all over the city of Miami and elsewhere.
