Cornbrook Metrolink station is on the former Manchester–Altrincham railway line, but the stop opened with the Eccles extension in 1999. Cornbrook was unique when opened as there was no access to/from the street, the stop being used for transfer between Bury-Altrincham line trams and Eccles line trams. Due to security issues and a low estimated usage of the station, Cornbrook was initially intended for interchange only passengers transfers between the Altrincham and Eccles lines.
Due to a rise in local population due to residential buildings, the stop's street access finally opened in September 2005, This was the emergency exit to street level, which has since been opened up to form the passenger entrance/exit to the station. The station is between the dual carriageway A56 Chester Road and the derelict Pomona Docks on the Manchester Ship Canal, in an area which is set to undergo considerable redevelopment.
