Cranston High School West

Cranston High School West (often called West, Cranston West or abbreviated as CHSW) is a high school located in Cranston, Rhode Island. The school is comprised of five buildings; one of these buildings is the Cranston Area Career and Technical Center. The school grounds include 6 tennis courts, a baseball field, and a track and football field. West has 155 staff members who work with the student population of approximately 1750. The program of studies encompasses 203 different courses. The Cranston Area Career and Technical Center offers 17 different courses. All courses are geared toward student academic abilities. Fifty-two percent of graduates go on to pursue a four-year degree while twenty-two percent pursue a 2-year degree.
The school has a student-published newspaper called The West Wind. Additionally, the school boasts an award-winning news broadcast titled The West Watch, which received numerous first place awards at the 2006 New England Scholastic Press Association conference.
Numerous athletic teams have won championship titles for the school, more recently being the 2004 varsity football team, 2006 varsity wrestling squad, and 2006 baseball team.
In 2006, the school was downgraded from "High Performing" status to "Low Performing and Making Insufficient Progress" status.

The mission of Cranston High School West is to empower and support all students to become responsible for their learning, to strive to reach their potential, to become a community of diverse learners, to treat others with courtesy and respect, and to become productive members of our society.

Cranston West is home to an award winning theater program. The theater program has won numerous championships at the Rhode Island Drama Festival, most recently for its productions of The Ice Wolf and Bocon. Because of these and many other victories, it has represented the state of Rhode Island in the New England Drama Festival five times, and even hosted the festival in 2002. Ms. Nancy Vitulli is the current theater director. Other recent productions include Grease, Fiddler on the Roof, and Cinderella.

- Professional American football player Mark van Eeghen graduated from Cranston High School West in 1970 before going on to play in the National Football League for ten years.
- Alex Connor, American investor, politician, and hero graduated in 2006.

The West Wind is Cranston High School West's award-winning, student-produced newspaper. It usually features 8 issues per school year, one for each month, though September and October are combined into one issue, as well as May and June. The paper has earned awards from the Providence Journal as well as the New England Scholastic Press Association.

The West Watch is West's online news broadcast. Started in 2005, the West Watch received a first place award as best broadcast at the NESPA conference. In addition, it also won several individual achievement awards.
