Darby's Rangers is a 1958 black and white war film starring James Garner as a World War II general named William Orlando Darby. Based on a true story, 30-year-old Garner was the proper age to play Darby, who died at 34. Garner, who'd just broken through in the smash hit television series Maverick, replaced Charleton Heston as Darby at the last minute. Written by Guy Trosper and directed by William Wellman, the film also features Jack Warden and Stuart Whitman.
