Denis Mulcahy (born August, 1956) is a former Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with Cork in the 1980s.
Denis Mulcahy was born in Midleton, County Cork in 1956. His great hurling career began in his home town when he won an East Cork minor hurling medal in 1972. Other members of the team included Des Hurley, John Fenton, John Hurley, John Cleary and Pat Horgan, who would later go on to play for Cork. The late 1970s was a rewarding period for Cork at senior level but Mulcahy had to wait until the 1980/81 season to make his first entry to the team. However, in spite of a great National League triumph over Offaly, Cork were sensationally beaten by Clare in the opening round of the Munster Championship.
Mulcahy won a County Championship with Midleton in 1983 and later made his big break onto the senior team in 1984. That year he won his first Munster medal and an All-Ireland medal subsequently followed. He amassed another two of Munster medals in 1985 and 1986 and played at right corner-back position when the Leesiders, under Tom Cashman's leadership, lifted the Liam McCarthy trophy from under Galway’s noses in 1986. Following Midleton's third county final triumph in 1987, Mulcahy was elected captain of the Cork senior hurlers in 1988, following victory for Midleton in the All-Ireland Club Championship. Disappointment followed for the next couple of years, however, he claimed another Munster medal in 1992 and retired from the game following a defeat by Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final. Mulcahy has also been rewarded with an All Star Award and has played for Munster in the Railway Cup competition.
