East Slope (University of Sussex)

East Slope is one of several accommodation blocks at the University of Sussex.
"The Slope" as it is commonly called, was constructed in the early 1970s, and is an area of undergraduate accommodation based on the side of a hill near the back of the eastern side of the campus. Series of stone steps connect paths which run horizontally along the slope. There are approximately 100 flats used by mainly first-year students, with lower-numbered flats generally being towards the bottom of the hill. These are normally six or twelve bedroom flats, with two showers, a bath, a kitchen and a communal area in each flat. There are also just over 20 family flats, and 8 small two-bedroom flats on the site. Around 550 students live here.
Towards the bottom of the blocks of accommodation there is the porter's office, and as you walk down through the car park in front of the office, East Slope Bar is to the right. This bar is probably the most "pub-like" of the bars on campus and is generally very lively in the evenings. On many weekday and weekend nights there is live music or a DJ set. Reportedly, bands such as Radiohead, Blur and The Kooks have played early gigs there. The bar tends to close around 11pm.
Rent for the academic year 2006-2007 is £66 a week, which means most students agreeing to a tenancy agreement of 39 weeks pay £2,574 for the duration of the academic year. This is the cheapest on campus. There are plans to demolish the existing East Slope accommodation block in 2010, and at the moment just to the south of the current car park new accommodation is as of November 2006 in the early stages of being built. This is opposite the back of Bramber House.
East Slope generally tends to be the "liveliest" accommodation on campus, with many student parties being hosted there, particularly at the beginning and end of terms. Many students are attracted to the accommodation by the relatively cheap rents and the communal feel of the accommodation.
