Aksi great (talk contribs) Hello. I am Akash and I have been editing Wikipedia since November 2005. I think I created my username some time before that. I really started editing around December 2005 but was still not totally familiar with wikipedia and a bit intimidated. Those were the days when I had to ask Ganesh for help on a simple redirect. I now have 2500+ (1212 in main wikispace) edits out of which around 200 are deleted edits. Those deleted edits are as a result of a month spent at the New Articles page which informed me about CSD, AFD and the entire deletion process. Around 1000 of my edits are as a result of another 2 months which I spent patrolling for vandals which is where I discovered the workings of many things at wikipedia like blocking, AIV. My worst day at wikipedia was obviously the day I got blocked but that day gave me 2 lessons - First was that I have some invaluable friends and co-workers at wikipedia. The second thing I learned was the use of all those Admin noticeboards. I used to think that no one gave much attention to it. But when admins whom I had never known condemned the block and lifted it immediately, it restored and redoubled my faith about the role of admins. I would like to apply (or be nominated) for adminship in the near future and would like suggestions as to how I can improve myself here. - Aksi_great (talk) 13:48, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Reviews

  • Solicite your "critics" (i.e. Philwelch and others) for opinions. For a general review, I have nothing to give except many goblets of praise. You seem a focused, intelligent and enthusiastic Wikipedian endowed with kindness, helpfulness and a capacity to learn and improve yourself. Your Wikiholism is also under control - I think that's very important, as it keeps your mind fresh and helps you live a better life. For the purposes of adminship, I suggest that you (a) diversify and spread yourself across a wide range of topics, tasks and articles - its good to be an India-specialist editor/admin, but a wider range will help Wikipedia, and yourself. (b) Aim to develop policy knowledgability - as an admin you'll need to be decisive and sharp. You are an unblooded weapon, so a few encounters with vandals and trolls will help you. Undoubtedly you'll be stressed, but the key is how fast and well you can resolve the problem without losing cool. Don't try to change human nature, just protect content and help productive users. (c) Don't be obsessed about an RfA (counting the days, hours, etc... Yes it does happen!) or worried about what people think - adminship is a responsibility, not a prize. I don't think you actually have much ground to cover. I suggest you go for adminship around independence day. Rama's arrow - this Fire burns always 20:26, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Upon reviewing your edits, I'd say you gotta step up activity (at a stable rate) across August. Don't go for an August RfA. Rama's arrow - this Fire burns always 04:20, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
  • I meant to give this review long ago so I apologize for the delay. Having known each other since our early days here (& pre-Wikipedia too), I have always considered Akash to be the model of a perfect Wikipedian. Kind, civil, helpful, you've got your priorities clear as you have not succumbed to excess Wikipediaholism like some of us ;) Also you have given primary importance to article editing and creation. Several (a majority) of users will most probably support you RFA at this point of time but the current RFA process does involve jumping through a lot of hoops to become an admin, so you may like to consider the following points:
  • Re-involve yourself into a bit of vandal-fighting. Vandal-fighting is a standard to support for many users.
  • Also re-involve yourself into AFD, TFD, XFD etc discussions. Another common standard for RFA's.
  • As for the time, I'd say some time by August end or September first week or so. The best time would probably right after Ahmedabad gets featured ;)
I definitely see you as an admin in the immediate future. Cheers & good luck --Srikeit (Talk | Email) 06:24, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
  • About the conflict noted below by you: Perhaps, I too remember the incidence. This was not a conflict. It was mis-use of administrative tools by an administrator. Sometimes, administrators would misuse the tools (intentionally or intuitively) as general editors may misuse the facility to edit wikipedia. To err is human and to forget and forgive is divine! --Bhadani 13:18, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
  • I've got you on my watchlist User:Blnguyen/RfA. :). Your personal conduct is immaculate and above question. You have written many good stubs on the Lok Sabha members will soon have an FA, which shows that you are committed to quality writing first and foremost. Of course, you can always get some more DYKs like I said before. I would say late September personally (I'm an old guy...21, so I am rather conservative, Srikeit and Sango with their exuberance of youth insisted on Srikeit's 2nd RfA going in early July, although I was rather concerned at copping 10-15 hits personally). The vandal-fighting can be done easily by sticking all the Indian states and major Indian cities, politicians, cricketers, etc onto your watchlist - they will attract a lot of nonsense. You can extend this to non-Indian stuff also. If you have a system which supports all the vandal tools then you don't even have to bother with this, it will prompt you and you only need to click a button. With regards to Srikeit's second post, see this for another source of support, and how you can get around the XfD issues, but better to get involved some more (this is easily fixed). However, you have an AfD nom list, which shows that you have indeed shown initiative. WP:DRV is a hotspot with extra attention available. You can get WT edits at WT:RFA or you can go to Wikipedia talk:Notability to discuss notability criteria. Some people want active policy discussion so this can help. • Excellent user. You will become an admin when the time is right. Remember, patience is the key. Also remember, Adminship is like an extra job. GizzaChat © 05:26, 3 September 2006 (UTC)
  • A user I admire. Dunno if any tools are available now to test him against my standards but I believe he'll do justice to them. I'm willing to nominate him end-September if only he'll prefer me over Blnguyen ;) who has several succesful noms of late! --Gurubrahma 06:29, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
  • Excelent wikipedian. Has been contributing to DYK regularly of late. Has at least one FAC experience. Go with the above advice. You should make a good admin.--Dwaipayan (talk) 14:08, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Questions

  1. Of your contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
Of all the articles I have worked on, I am extremely pleased with the way Ahmedabad has shaped up. The article should reach FA status soon after a few minor problems have been solved. I also like St. Xavier's High School Loyola Hall (my school) but that is more due to my affection to the school. I have 4 DYKs to my name, 1 each for Ahmedabad Stock Exchange, Mrinalini Sarabhai, Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande and Pisharoth Rama Pisharoty. I am proud of all 4 articles. I have created in all around 75 articles (many of them still stubs). I created article for most of the MPs elected from my state Gujarat. Recently I have populated the List of Magsaysay awardees and I feel that the list has great potential for DYK.
  2. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
I have just encountered one really stressful situation during my time at wikipedia on May 15 2006 which resulted in a block, then an unblock, a major discussion on AN/I. It was a big mess and I will try to make it as short and clear as I can. Philwelch, an admin, made a remark on Samir's talk page which I considered to be a personal attack and thus warned Phil about it using a template. He didn't like it very much and went on to block me for "harassing an admin". This disturbed me a lot and so I put an unblock tag on my talk page. He then further blocked me as "shorter block failed to result in behavior modification". Sundar came to know about this and unblocked me immediately ("Unnecessary block"). Gurubrahma then posted this note at AN where my stand was endorsed my all the admins who reviewed the situation. I came back and by the time I posted my view on AN, I had already received an apology from Phil. I decided that an apology was all I required and there was no need to go further. And that was the end of the entire incident. Since then I have never looked back much on the incident. Samir is now an admin and I am glad for that.
