Empoleon (エンペルト, Enperuto^?, Emperte in original Japanese language versions) are one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar^[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. Empoleon are famous for evolving from one of the three species of Pokémon the player can choose at the start of their adventure in the Diamond and Pearl versions of the series. The purpose of Empoleon in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.^[2]

The English name Empoleon^[3] is a portmanteau of the word emperor, referring to the species of Emperor penguins, and the name Napoleon, referring to Napoleon Bonaparte. Empoleon's Japanese name, Emperte, similarly, is a portmanteau of the word emperor and the name Bonaparte.

Empoleon resembles both the Emperor Penguin and the Royal Penguin, but more so the former. It has metallic edges on its wings and three claws underneath. The appearance of its body gives the impression that it is wearing a tuxedo. On its head, Empoleon has three distinct horns resembling a trident, a symbol associated with the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon. This follows the trend of fully evolved Sinnoh starters being a reference to a deity of myth or religion. The length of the three horns extending from the beak symbolize an Empoleon's strength; generally, the longer the horns are, the stronger the Pokémon is. The leader of a group possesses the largest horn. The tips of its wings are so strong that it is said they can destroy entire slabs of drift ice.^[4]

Empoleon was introduced in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl as the final stage of Piplup after it evolves from Prinplup at level 36. It is the first Water- and Steel-type Pokémon, giving it more resistances then any other fully evolved starter pokemon and weak against only three, which makes it a relatively durable combatant, even being immune to poison.

Empoleon evolves from Prinplup at level 36 and can learn Aqua Jet immediately after evolution. It has very good Special stats, making it great at both using and defending against special attacks. Empoleon's Defense is decent, though lower than its Special Defense; this, combined with high special stats and its many resistances, can make it a decent tank or special attacker. Overall, Empoleon has balanced stats, although it possesses poor Speed.

If Empoleon has a high happiness rating, a Move Tutor in Sinnoh will offer to teach it the move Hydro Cannon, an exclusive move shared with Blastoise, Feraligatr and Swampert.
