- January 18 - The European Court of Human Rights finds Britain guilty of inhuman and degrading treatment of republican internees in Northern Ireland, but not guilty of torture.
- February 17 - The IRA La Mon restaurant bombing kills 12 people.
- June 1 - David Cooke of the Alliance Party becomes the first non-unionist Lord Mayor of Belfast.
- June 21 - An outbreak of shooting between Provisional IRA members and the British Army leaves one civilian and three IRA men dead. [1]
