- July 3 - The home of Gerry Fitt, a former SDLP MP, is fire bombed by members of the Provisional IRA in west Belfast, Northern Ireland.
- September 25 - Thirty-eight members of the Provisional IRA escape in a mass jailbreak from Maze prison in Belfast, Northern Ireland, resulting in the death of a prison guard and several others injured.
- November 20 - Three church elders are shot to death outside Darkley, Northern Ireland, later suspected by authorities to suspect the involvement of members belonging to the Irish National Liberation Army.
- December 17 - A Provisional IRA car bomb kills six and injures over 90 people outside Harrods department store in London, England.
