Gallego was born in Sacramento on July 17, 1946 to Gerald Albert Gallego and Lorraine Pullen Bennett Gallego. At the time of his birth, Gallego's father was incarcerated at the San Quentin State Prison in California. The elder Gallego was later paroled, fled to Mississippi, and killed two police officers in two separate incidents, for which he was executed in 1955.[1]
Gallego's mother was a prostitute, and Gallego spent much of his childhood serving as a runner for various pimps. He was charged with burglary when he was six years old, and at age twelve, was charged with committing lewd and lascivious acts with a six-year-old girl.[2]
By September of 1977, at age 31, Gallego had been divorced five times and had been arrested at least twenty-three times.[3] At this time, Gallego met Charlene Adell Williams at a poker club. They were married, and her name was changed to Charlene Gallego.
