James (Jim) Gerard Spanarkel (born June 28, 1957, in Jersey City, New Jersey) is an American television analyst for the National Basketball Association. Spanarkel, who himself was a professional basketball player, selected 16th overall in the 1979 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers and traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 1980. He played organized high school basketball in Hudson Catholic High School, in Jersey City. He has a wife Janet, and four children (James, Bridget, Stephanie, and Andrew).[12] He is the current first vice president and a certified financial planner at Merrill Lynch in New Jersey.

Before Spanarkel was a First Team Acclaim All American, in addition the First Team All-ACC First 2000 point scorer in his school history at alma mater, Duke University. He would be Duke's team MVP during his final three season's (1977-1979). Spanarkel was team captain in his junior and senior years, and was announced NCAA's East Regional Most Outstanding Player in 1978[13]. He graduated from Duke in 1979.
The Philadelphia 76ers drafted Spanarkel with the 16th overall pick in the 1979 NBA Draft. He commenced play for the team during the 1979-80 campaign. He later played for the Dallas Mavericks, for the next four seasons, starting in 1980. Spanarkel was capable of leading them in scoring, averaging 14.0 ppg. His NBA career ended in 1984.

He wouls as well serves as a studio analyst for NBA TV; after his NBA Career ended in 1984. Jim Spanarkel worked a total of 18 years as Nets television analyst, and he additionally works CBS Sports' regular season and NCAA Men's Championship college basketball coverage (anaylsis). He as well serves as a studio analyst for NBA TV. During his entire broadcasting career, he has provided basketball coverage on CBS Sports, ESPN, Fox Sports, and as of late the New Jersey Nets.[12][13]

- In 1990, Jim Spanakel was inducted into the Duke Sport's Hall of Fame.[1]
- In 2001, Spanarkel was inducted in to the Duke Circle of Honor.[2]
- Jim Spanarkel was inducked into the UPI First Team All-America: 1979.[3]
- He was inducted second into the All-ACC Team.[4]
- MVP of All-ACC Tournament teams in 1978; 1979.[5]
- He was the ACC Freshmen of the year in 1976 for Duke.[6]
