Kirkley Community High School is a comprehensive school in the Kirkley district of Lowestoft, Suffolk, England. It has approximately 1300 students.[1]
It counts three of the founder members of British rock group The Darkness as former pupils.[2] In autumn 2005 the second series of channel 4's "Rock School" was filmed at the school. Auditions were held and several students were taught how to play rock music by KISS bassist Gene Simmons who eventually selected five of his students to perform as a rock group. The show culminated with the group opening for Judas Priest and Anthrax in front of 20 000 fans in LA.[3] The lead singer of the band, Lil' Chris was signed to RCA records and recently released his self-titled debut album.[4] Five of the girls featured on the show went on to form a band called The Upraw; three of the founder members of the band have since quit.[5]
KHS also has its own radio station, KPlay Radio, which can be listened to across the world, playing the latest British chart music.[6]

Apart from the Rock School 'documentary', the school has appeared, albeit briefly on a Norwegian chat show. In the show it was described as "a sewage re-education institute." The remark caused uproar in the school, however the company producing the show avoided lawsuits saying: "the school is not clearly recognisable as Kirkley High School." They also apologised for any offense caused.
