Kuala Lumpur Sentral
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kuala Lumpur Sentral (KL Sentral) or Sentral Kuala Lumpur refers to the integrated complex which houses the main railway station of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. Opened on April 16, 2001, it was built to replace the old Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, a colonial-era landmark which remains open for commuter trains only. KL Sentral is the largest train station in Southeast Asia.
KL Sentral was designed as an intermodal transportation hub. Most of Kuala Lumpur's rail-based public transportation serve KL Station while many intercity trains serving Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore begin here.
[edit] Overview
KL Sentral actually refers to the entire 290,000 square metres of development which was built on the former Keretapi Tanah Melayu marshalling yard in Brickfields. The entire development includes the transportation hub, hotels, office towers, condominiums and shopping malls and is expected to be completed in 2012.
KL Sentral has been divided into 14 land parcels, each representing a different function. Some of these lots have been fully constructed and are already in use, while others are either in the process of being built, or are still awaiting development, according to the phased programme.
KL Sentral is developed by a consortium made up of Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB), Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) and Pembinaan Redzai Sdn Bhd.
[edit] Lot A, B, C, D : Financial precincts
These lots are proposed to be the developed for financial development in the area.
[edit] Lot E : Entertainment and convention centre
This lot is proposed to make the KL Sentral as one of the entertainment hub of Kuala Lumpur. The deck of the this development has been completed.
[edit] Lot F
It is planned for future office block. Currently, it is used for furniture exhibition mall and F&B centre.
[edit] Lot G : Integrated Centre
This is under development and will consist of 1,200,000 sq ft shopping complex, 600,000 sq ft office block, 500,000 sq ft serviced apartments, and a 546,000 sq ft three-star hotel. It will also make transiting to Monorail station more convenient as it will offer an integrated connection with the Stesen Sentral.
[edit] Lot H : Stesen Sentral
Stesen Sentral is the name given for Lot H, which becomes the transportation hub within its KL Sentral development project, although the public generally refers to the station itself as "KL Sentral".
[edit] Rail services
The following services can be taken from Stesen Sentral:
- KLIA Ekspres: For the high-speed direct train to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA)
- KLIA Transit: For the high-speed commuter train service to KLIA
- KTM Komuter: For Klang Valley's commuter train service
- KTM intercity trains: For intercity trains
- Kelana Jaya Line: For the Kelana Jaya-Terminal Putra light rail transit (LRT) service
Although not located within Stesen Sentral, KL Monorail's KL Sentral station is located across busy Jalan Tun Sambanthan, a 140 m walk away by covered walkway.
Stesen Sentral is divided into separate sections for different types of rail services:
- Level One of Transit Concourse for urban public transit services like the KTM Komuter, KLIA Transit and the Kelana Jaya Line light rail transit.
- Level Two of Transit Concourse for KTM intercity trains.
- KL City Air Terminal (KL CAT) on Level One for the KLIA Ekspres, the high-speed rail service to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). See section below.
Stesen Sentral also has retail and food outlets as well as a food court. Hidden from public view, Stesen Sentral also houses KTM's maintenance depot which is located beneath the complex.
Stesen Sentral will be able to accommodate 50 million passengers a year and up to 100 million by 2020 (KL Sentral website).
There is a facility for purchasing and reloading the Touch 'n Go card in this station.
[edit] KL City Air Terminal
Located within Stesen Sentral, the KL City Air Terminal (KL CAT) is virtually an extension of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. It is recognised by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) as a city destination with the code XKL.
KL CAT was officially opened together with KLIA Ekspres on 14 April 2002.
Besides being the departure and arrival point for the KLIA Ekspres, KL CAT also has luggage check-in services. There are plans to offer check-out service but this is not yet available.
Currently, only passengers flying Malaysia Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Royal Brunei Airlines can check-in their luggage at KL CAT. Those flying other airlines can only do so at KLIA.
The minimum check-in time is two hours before flight departure time.

These lots consists of two hotels, each owned by Daito Asia Development Sdn. Bhd. and Daisho Asia Development Sdn. Bhd. respectively. The 5-star hotels have a maximum of 934 rooms and are currently operating.

[edit] KL Sentral Monorail Station
The monorail station is not directly connected to the Kuala Lumpur Sentral transport hub, despite its proximity to the building. Rather, passengers that intend to reach KL Sentral Monorail Station from the station or vice versa must walk 140 metres across a marketplace. It is located along Jalan Tun Sambanthan in Brickfields. The station is a terminating stop in the KL Monorail line. Because the station serves as both the first and final stop, the station consists of one rail line with two platforms on both sides, for passengers embarking and disembarking the train, respectively.
[edit] KL Sentral as a bus hub
KL Sentral has also been made a city bus hub by Rapid KL under its bus network revamp. Besides city shuttle buses, KL Sentral is also the city-end hub for trunk routes serving Area Five and Area Six, which includes Damansara, Old Klang Road, Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Puchong, Shah Alam and Klang.
Buses to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (both the Main Terminal and Low Cost Carrier Terminal) also operate from KL Sentral while other bus operators go near KL Sentral along Jalan Tun Sambanthan.
