[edit] LaSallette in Attleboro
Before the 1970s, the main building at the shrine in Attleboro on Route 118 consisted of a large, handsome 4-story gothic building that served as a dormitory and meeting center. In the 1960s and 1970s, the order built a modern center down the hill from the original building. Somehow in doing so the LaSallettes became the victims of fraud and lost a lot of money. They started hosting a Labor Day weekend carnival, and began to market the shrine during the Christmas season by promoting the Christmas lights; many thousands of people attend each winter. In the late 1990s, a brother visiting from England fell asleep with a lit cigarette and the original buildling burned to the ground, leaving only the masonry shell; the building was unrecoverable. There was only one fatality due to the fire. Here is a photo of the remains of the tragic fire: from SouthCoastToday.com dated 1999. According to a link from topix.net that I couldnt' bring up on my screen, the La Sallettes are preparing to start construction on a big new addition. And on a happier note, here is a link to Father Pat, LaSallette's famous singing priest and songwriter: Father Andre Patenaude --McTrixie 17:46, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
