NetPBX
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
[edit] Principle
NetPBX is an internet based version of a conventional Private branch exchange or PBX. Most of the features (e.g. free calls between the connected subscribers, call forwarding, parking) people know from their home based system are processed on a Server e.g. rented in a data processing service center. Conventional PBX hardware can be removed from homes and offices. This becomes possible by the usage of internet based telephony (Voice-over-IP). A so called SIP phone or a normal telephone is connected to the internet and the NetPBX server by a specific adapter for the SIP protocol (Session Initiation Protocol). The dial switching is provided by a software on the NetPBX server.
[edit] Advantages
- Lower costs for hard- and software as well as for electricity.
- Subscribers can perform free calls among each other.
- Extensive call handling (e.g. like in a call center) can be implemented.
- Features are transparent, evident like in home PBX environments.
- Connected subscribers can be anywhere in the world, all they need is a reliable internet connection for their phones for communicating with the NetPBX server.
[edit] Disadvantages
- A reliable server with a stable internet connection has to be provided.
- In case of the NetPBX server or its internet connection being non-available the entire PBX system is down.
