[edit] About

Nitish Jain is the president and founder of SPJCM. Dr. Vijay Sethi serves as the dean of the Global MBA Program, while Dr. Balakrishna Grandhi heads the EMBA Program. Sanjay Dalvi serves as the the dean of the Dubai campus.

Most faculty are drawn from SPJIMR, Mumbai or other top tier Indian B-Schools. Other lecturers are drawn from the professional world, including entrepreneurs and executives. SPJCM's first permanent non-staff faculty was hired in 2006, and is based in the Singapore campus.

Except for those who choose to forgo it (entrepreneurial and family business leanings), SPJCM provides placement assistance for graduating students. The university also maintains relationships with industry entities, and brings in "Visiting Wisdom" and "CEO Quest" speakers from the professional world to share their experiences with the student body.

[edit] Academics

SPJCM offers an intensive one year full-time residential post-graduate program (GMBA), as well as a comprehensive two year part-time executive program for working professionals (EMBA).

[edit] GMBA

There are two batch intakes in a year, numbering about 100 to 130 students each; one in July and one in December. Each intake is divided into two cohorts; one sent to Singapore, and the other to Dubai. The cohorts complete most of their core courses at their respective campuses during the first semester, and then switch countries during the second semester to complete their specialization courses. Specializations offered for GMBA include:

Each semester is officially divided into three terms of about six weeks each, although these schedules are flexible. Each term comprises eight or so credit courses spread over three fortnight-long blocks. The courses are often moved around within the semester depending on faculty availability. In order to have students maintain an awareness of the world, "Newspaper Quizzes" are conducted for credit as well. Soft Skills sessions, credited and otherwise, are a mandatory part of the curriculum. In addition to final examinations, the pedagogy gives significant weight to regular quizzes and group projects/assignments.

Course modules for the full-time program are conducted over a span of maximum two weeks each, but frequently get compressed down into a week, as the faculty are often flown in and out of the country on tight schedules. Students have no official weekends - lectures can take place any day of the week, early morning to late evening. Classes are usually recorded and saved for later viewing.

During the first semester, the Special Group Project or SGP course has the students do case studies or other work for a company (regional companies are encouraged for local exposure purposes). In the second semester, a dissertation/capstone project is undertaken by all students to round off their degrees. Guest lecturers from the professional world are often brought in to provide added contemporary and/or local perspective.

[edit] EMBA

The EMBA courses are conducted in the evenings and/or on weekends for three or more hours at a time, to accomodate the schedule of employed students. Usually, a full course will be completed in a week. EMBA specializations include:

[edit] Campuses

S P Jain's Singapore campus is situated along Hyderabad Road, near the intersection of Depot and Alexandra. It is located not far from downtown Singapore, and well-connected to public transport. The campus previously belonged to the Institute of Dental Health, and to the Nizam of Hyderabad at one time before that. While it had begun hosting courses by June 2006, the new campus was officially inaugrated on March 9th 2007 by Singapore's Minister of Education, Tharman Shanmugaratnam. The seven-acre campus, featuring lush landscaping and open space, is dominated by a residential/academic/adminstrative block (Block A) and a library/faculty/executive development/cafeteria block (Block B).

The Singapore campus is divided into roughly the following zones:

  • Residential areas, where the students live in single or shared spaces, spread over three and a half floors. Men and women live in separate areas. All rooms are air conditioned, and wireless internet is provided 24x7.
  • Academic areas, where the classes are conducted for EMBA and GMBA participants. They include the twin-projector large halls, and the single-projector smaller halls, both with amphitheatre-style seating. The larger classrooms are equipped for session recording, with swivel video cameras and wireless microphones. The Leadership Hall on the ground level functions as an auditorium as well as a lecture hall.
  • Reading rooms, including study lobbies and the study den.
  • Office areas, for faculty (in Block B) and administration (in Block A).
  • The library building, featuring a growing collection of management books and journals.
  • The Executive Development Center, completed in March 2007, will be used for corporate training programs, lectures and events. It was originally built by the British, and was refurbished with a combination of modern and colonial styles to fit SPJCM's needs.
  • The cafeteria building, which serves specially-prepared "Indian vegetarian" and non-vegetarian Indian food for the (mostly Indian) students.

[edit] Extra-curricular Activities

Despite the rigor of the course, GMBA program participants manage to engage in a few extracurricular activities. A variety of general interest and specialization newsletters are published by the students and circulated online to the students, alumni and faculty. The university and/or the students also organize team-building outings when possible, including beach trips and dune bashing.

[edit] Admission

Application forms and prospecti for GMBA are available at SPJIMR and SPJCM campuses. Online application is also accepted. The admission process is free at the application form level. Once accepted, the rest of the process, involving group discussions, personal interviews and essay tests, is conducted at a nominal fee. GMBA admission requirements mandate that applicants take either CAT, GMAT or SPJCM's own aptitude test.

[edit] Accreditation and Ranking

SPJCM is one of four foreign institutions designated "Institution of Higher Learning" by the Singapore Ministry of Education, enabling it to grant a MBA degree from the Singapore campus. It is also accredited by the Dubai International Financial Centre [1].

SP Jain has been consistently ranked among the top 10 B-schools in South Asia by AsiaInc magazine. In 2006, it was ranked 3rd among private Indian B-schools by Outlook, and among the top 10 in terms of global linkage, industry interface and placement performance[2].
