The illustration for the t-butyl scheme is incorrect; if you count the carbons on the newly formed ring, the reaction is impossible. It seems that whoever copied the illustration from the original paper combined two different compounds from Scheme 1, p. 2493. In actuality there is an extra carbon between the furan ring and the r-substituted one in the reagent. Similarly, the R and OH groups are shifted by one and rearranged in the product.
