[edit] Plot
Charlie Tuttle (Jeff Daniels) is a partner in a successful law firm who is supposed to go to Paradise Bluff, Nevada to request a continuance in a case. But that conflicts with his bachelor's party so his best man, actor Richard Rietti (Michael Richards) drives him out to Paradise Bluff and shows his friend a great time instead. During the night, Charlie gets knocked out in a barfight and gets prescribed some painkillers. The next day (the day of the court appearance), Richard checks on his friend and finds he has taken all of the pills in the bottle. Charlie winds up in no shape to appear in court that day as the representative of Benny Gibbs (Rip Torn), Charlie's boss' hopelessy guilty relative, so Richard impersonates Charlie and the case ends up going to trial with an actor posing as the defendant's lawyer.
[edit] Response
Trial and error had a fairly poor response from IMDB with an average rating of 5.4/10 from over 200 votes.
[edit] Trivia
The judge's name in the movie is Paul Z. Graf, which is a play on the name Palsgraf. Palsgraf is the plaintiff in a very famous law school case involving torts (lawsuits to address civil wrongs - i.e. trespass, negligence, etc).
