Webway
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Webway in the Warhammer 40,000 universe is an extra-dimensional space utilized by the Eldar for faster-than-light travel.
The Webway was created by the ancient Eldar before the Fall, utilizing technology that has since been forgotten by the present day Eldar.
The Webway is a fairly safe method of travel, being free of the Daemon infestations that plague normal alternate-dimension faster-than-light travel in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The Eldar must exclusively make use of the Webway; due to their extensive psychic presence in the Warp, utilizing ordinary travel through the Warp calls daemons to them like flies to honey.
Much of the Webway has been destroyed or uncharted since the Fall of the Eldar. Combined with the fact that the technology used to build it was lost, intact Webway gates are some of the Eldar's most treasured artifacts. They range in size from personal gates for foot travel to massive ones that entire Craftworlds use. Because of the gates' rarity and importance, the Eldar will stop at nothing to either claim them or deny their use to the enemy.
The infamous Black Library, the home to all the surviving knowledge of the Eldar race, is reachable only through the webway, via a path so secretive and well-guarded that Ahriman of the Thousand Sons, one of the mightiest Chaos Space Marines in the Galaxy was unable to penetrate it.
The laughing god Cegorach and his followers, the Eldar Harlequins also reside in the webway protecting the webway from chaos and helping the Craftworld Eldar in times of need.
It's been rumored that during the final days before the Horus Heresy that the Emperor of Mankind had been secretly working on a device that would have allowed humankind access to the Webway. This device was a warp gate behind the Golden Throne which he declared would remain closed in his final words before his integration with the Golden Throne.
